Hibiscus closeup

Hibiscus closeup. This lens is not really a true macro lens though promoted as such, but still provides some nice closeups.

The Ident Shot

I subscribe to the principle of taking a quick shot of every insect I track as soon as possible, so that I can get an accurate identification and decide whether to stalk it.

Sometimes the lighting is less than ideal - backlighting and exposure errors are common - and I don't usually keep these once a better image has been taken.

However, this snap of a Common Darter really shows the effect of the rounded blades in the D-FA 100 WR, even if all the PS sliders seem to have gone to their extremes.

I have a K1, but don't tend to use it for macro shots, preferring my K-S2 instead for the longer working distance. With flash in the mix, this isn't a hardship, but some of the higher ISO shots in natural light taken with the K-S2 would be much better if taken with the K1.

Of course, the loss of crop factor puts me back where I was in film days. I then conveniently forget that 90 - 105mm on film was absolutely fine on Kodachrome at 64ASA.

To confuse me further, I recently had the chance to shoot with an Irix 150mm macro. It's a big chunk to lug around, but it is extremely well-made, and gives me an effective 225mm on the crop body. I'll try it on the FF body next and compare notes.

Bladder campion, multi-file stitch, and a crop from the lower right corner that makes a totally different image. Canon-mount Sigma 150mm macro via 0.71 "Ultra" adapter on a Pany G9. This has become my standard bug-hunting field rig.

Oly 60mm macro on Pany G9. Many grasshoppers this year when I'm out early AM bug hunting. The spider was really too small for the 60mm macro, The body excluding legs is barely one mm long. Required too deep a crop to retain much detail.

Old Sears lens tryout

In my cabinet, I found an old Sears combo zoom lens-macro lens. This lens belongs to a (hopefully) defunct type of lenses that I call fiddly macros, meaning that there are various steps to take to move the lens into its macro mode. It is a cheap way to get a macro lens, as ebay shows lots of lenses ranging from $9.99 freight paid up to something north of $40 plus freight charges. The images it creates are not particularly sharp though they can be usable as the attached images show. One real strength of this bargain bin approach to macro photography is color fidelity, which is excellent, on a par with or perhaps in some cases even better than lenses costing hundreds of dollars more. So if you don't mind fiddly controls and a little softness and color fidelity/correctness is a priority, this lens might just be the one for you.

KIT: Pentax K-3 with Auto Sears Zoom 80-200mm f 4 macro.
