Dark-Edged Bee Fly

Bee flies are difficult, but not impossible to catch in flight at relatively close range. They appear to be territorial (in three dimensions) and will often return to the same spot.

You will spend a lot of time braced against a bush, pre-focused at about 1:5. The extra working distance of my Irix 150mm helps. There is a strong element of spray and pray, though.

When it gets above freezing again (-2 to -1 today (30-31 F)) I'm going to fit my FA 100/2.8 macro on the AFA on the K-3 on my three legged friend close to our flowers. Thanks for the ideas!

I didn't use a tripod, but then I was after the territorial behaviour not the feeding. It was 24C here yesterday, and at that temperature it's a bit like an arcade shoot-em-up...

I'll be interested to see how the 100/AFA setup works. I could have done with just a few more than 150mm. The IF of the Irix loses mm as the magnification rises.
