I don't recall ever seeing the red 'shrooms. Are they edible, or is it a glaring warning to not touch?

I can't seem to follow the link to norm's earlier post but if it's of the red mushroom Amanita muscaria (easily googled) YES IT'S A GLARING WARNING!!! It is by no means the worst toxic mushroom and some do take low doses for its hallucinogenic effects, but that's probably a bit silly as there are much safer hallucinogenic alternatives among mushrooms.

I have seen them displaying a number of clear insect bite marks together with a pile of dead insects at their bases.

They are pretty common around here. I can find them in 4 or 5 places on a 2 minute walk. Since a couple of Tess' neighbours who were mushroom experts died after mis-identifying mushrooms, found dead in their kitchen with a helping of poisonous mushrooms on their plate, I decided the risk of being a mushroom expert negated any kind of reward.

Somehow, I would not classify myself as a mushroom expert. I'll select my edible mushrooms in the grocery store.

Your comment reminds me that the irony of foraging for wild mushrooms is that the most deadly are the most "supermarket looking" mushrooms.
Death cap
Destroying Angel
Destroying Angel 2

When I forage for mushrooms, I stick to the handful that I've researched extensively, which are distinct looking and have no similarity to inedible fungi.

I think it's called a Candy-Striped Leafhopper.

1:2 seems so small when I'm used to doing greater than lifesize!

Interesting that you got such good results with the 55~300mm and a close-up filter. I used mine occasionally with a Nikon achromatic filter and got several good images.

Thanks! It works pretty good, but REALLY requires careful focusing. Even a little bit off ruins it. I've found live view with focus peaking is a real help.
