Large red damselfly and victim (Tiger Sawfly?). Sigma 180mm/5.6 with 20mm extension tube, KP, natural light.
Amazing capture. Was it a handheld shot? Autofocus?

Manual focus, handheld, but the absolute key is fieldcraft. I can see "different" as an insect flys by - this individual was not flying the same as the others due to its "load". Feeding damselflies are quite unlikely to take off as you approach.

I like to keep the KP on or around ISO640, where the accelerator kicks in. This can imply setting Av mode on a fixed ISO, or TAv (as here) if the ISO comes out at 640-800.

The short KA tube is a perfect match for the Sigma. It doesn't quite get you 1:1, but it does get you extra working distance - about 75cm here.

A KP and Sigma 180/5.6 make a very compact and lightweight kit for fieldwork.

Third test stack (you probably don't want to see the first two) of Laowa 2.5-5x using Laowa modeling light accessory. Ran out of battery before stack was complete, but you get the idea.

The modeling light is not really suitable for great macro shots, but is good for a "quck & dirty" stack. Did not have time to set up a proper diffused flash set up.

The second image is a actual pixel crop of the first. 144 images taken at 5x to make stack.

It will likely take me some time to learn how to light subjects like these to get the best stacks. A subject like this could take 4-8 hours to properly edit and get all of the hairs in place.

I probably spent about an hour before I decided to quit. Stacked in Zerene with editing of eyes and select hairs in Zerene, post processing in Faststone.

Usually these quickly fly away on me. This one was occupied. The wind was blowing, so only got a few keepers.

This robberfly caught a yellowjacket (wasp).

I also got an unexpected bonus when I looked at the images. The inset shows tiny flies taking advantage of the robber fly's meal. Some are quite fat. I would not be suprised if they piggyback on the robber fly, enjoying lodging with buffet.
