Hmmmm....a cz distagon 18mm would be 27mm on aps-c. That's pretty close to ideal. I have a 28, a tamron f2.5. Its fairly sharp, though I hear the pentax k28 is sharper. The center sharpness is superb though. I understand that WA lenses under 28-35mm start to show distortion. It is the nature of the beast. It is also the downfall of aps-c IMO. The crop sensors are great for zooms, but not so much for WA. I'm starting to think that the Pentax 12-24 might be the best all around solution for WA, and it is reasonably priced too. I'm curious...whats the going rate on an 18mm distagon? You can never have too many primes.....

EDIT: $1500..... OUCH.... I knew zeiss glass was pricey but geez

If you meant 28/2, then no wonder, it's CZ Distagon 28/2
Unfortunatelly, there are not decent modern 18mm primes for K-mount today. Even the CZ is not quite good.
So I would rather switch to another system for this purpose. For example, recent fuji xpro-1.

It really doesn't matter what is considered normal .... fact is 28mm lenses are virtually distortion free and 21mm and under show varying amounts of distortion. Reason why 28mm lenses make such good landscape lenses !

I agree with most of what Kevin (Frogfish) said. My experience from the two DA Limiteds I owned was they were not equal to Voigtlander, while the experience I had with the FA 31 was better but I still like the IQ of Voigtlanders better.

Top quality UWA's can be just as expensive as top quality extreme telephotos. I just picked up a KA mount Spiratone 20mm/2.8 for ~$150. It's soft at 2.8, but very crisp by f/4. I bought it specifically for a landscape lens, though I haven't been able to try it yet.

Distortion, as long as it's basic, can be corrected fairly easily with Lightroom or similar PP tools. One lens that's phenominal in all ways but distortion and size is the Samyang 14mm/2.8. Extremely sharp with very low CA. Problem is that it has a moustache distortion that's more complex and harder to correct. For landscape this could be a non-issue, but any architecture shooting would be difficult.

I'd recommend either the VL 20/3.5, A20/2.8, or the Spiratone(aka Soligor) 20/2.8 for KA mount. Also there's a Mir 20 that I hear is good in M42 (avoid the Carl Zeiss Jena). Finally the kit lens 18-55 makes a better landscape lens than you'd think.

Since this is the VL thread, take a peek at the great shots from the VL20. At infinity I think the lens performs better than many reviews suggest.

Edit: les just beat me to the punch.
Looks like he has a different view of the 20mm focal length. Looking back at the landscape shots I've done with my kit lens, I seem to use 18-22mm the most, but of course I'm actually banking on the dramatic wide angle effect. To each their own, and I've been pondering about his Contax 28mm for a while now.

Landed my 2nd Voigt...the 58mm Nokton...

After lusting over it for some time, I've finally landed my 2nd Voigtlander, the 58mm. I put most of the blame on Alan Smithee, who's work with this lens sets a bar.

One of "the boy", from my first outing with this lens. I think I'm going to have to part with a few of the other 50's in the collection, this lens is a beauty. No regrets trading my DA 35mm Ltd for it.

Very nice picture . . . it shows the great color rendering that seems part of all Voigtlanders, just like Vince's lovely shots show. It's funny but I also sold my DA 35mm Limited to buy my first Voigtlander, the Nokton 58mm (I've got six VLs now). Here's a shot with the VL 58 at F2:

The best place to get VLs at the moment is Hong Kong Buy &Sell. HKBNS sell on ebay but at a premium, it is far cheaper to buy direct from their website Hong Kong Buy and Sell Limited they are great to deal with and have K mount stock. I've bought 3 VLs from them and have recieved delivery with-in 2 days to AUS.

I got mine from Camtec in Montreal. I'm a little late at the party here, I wish I had known about these a couple years ago - a 125 would have been good to acquire.

Here's a picture from the 90mm on my K-5. F4.5 @ 1/180, ISO 400 (this is without the close-up lens)

Brought the 50/1.8 Color Ultron out for a play today. I just love the focusing ring on VLs, makes manual focusing so easy ... I'm going to have to get some more !

Cheat you're not supposed to get them two at a time. You're supposed to buy one and then test your will power in how long you restrain from getting a 2nd... still I guess you have to grab these when you can... though they feel like they will be around for ever. My (the 90mm) arrived at the start of the month

Haha agreed Col, nice pic btw!

I keep telling myself I only need one lens per brand (I know this is pointless), but if a VL125 becomes available, my OCD lens rule will go out the window.
