Originally posted by ZoeB How's the 85? I want to get something around that focal length and was considering it, but I feel like for a longer prime I'd want autofocus, since i'd probably mostly be using it for portraits and streets.
For 'planned' portraits, the 85 is fantastic, since AF wouldn't come into play as much. Off the cuff and for street would be another story. The 85 has a really obnoxious minimum focus distance (about twice what the 35 has), plus both lenses are huge.
Theres nothing subtle about either of the two lenses, size-wise - the 85 is about the same size as my Sigma 10-20. I'd think a limited would be much, MUCH better for street shooting due to being lighter and less 'in your face' so to speak.
I'm not saying you couldn't stop the 85 down and use it with hyperfocal, but its still a big, heavy, intimidating looking piece of glass.
Heres a group shot, just to get an idea of the size - the 85 is on the right, next to a 135. Note that's with the hood down - you can't use the lens tat way (its either remove the hood or use it on the lens - it blocks the focus ring when stored the way shown here). The 35 is the huge beast in the back next to the retracted Sigma 70-300.
