I feel kind of bad - I just broke the 100% recommendation streak for the 85mm on its 39th review. Mabe I just have a bad copy, but I was out shooting with it a few weeks back, and lo and behold the slow aperture issue cropped up again from last Spring.

As great as the lens is, I can't recommend someone getting something that won't work for half the year in the environment the user lives in.

The bizarre part is it has nothing to do with the IQ, the handling or anything like that - its just a weird bug in the design for a lack of a better term. If I lived down south I probably would never have noticed the issue with it.

I don't know that specific lens. But I have read that Samyang zoom lenses have been really bad. In fact, most Samyang lenses before the "new generation" have been fairly bad (by "new generation" I mean 8mm fisheye, 10mm, 14mm, 16mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 135mm, 100mm macro, 24mm TS). Only in the recent years Samyang started making really high image quality primes

I tried one of these on my K200D in a shop once and, at least wide open, the image quality was pretty terrible.

Samyang lenses can be divided into two groups - the new primes (the 85/1.4 and anything produced later) which are reputed to be extremely good, and the older ones. As far as I'm aware the older ones are to be avoided in all cases as they're very poor quality optically.

this was shot wide open rokinon 85 on the k5. not really the best photo, but i was super surprised at its sharpness at wide open. i just brightened it up, and i was testing to see what this lens is capable of.

i am plesently surprised that the samyang/rokinon/bower/etc lens have the 'A' setting on their lens which allows for the aperture to be changed through the camera electronically rather than lens manually.
