That still may be a skeeter. Males do not have probosci as only females take a bloodmeal.

1s exposure, M135/3.5 + reversed FA 35/2
My first photo using this very interesting technique.

I really like the composition of the Forget Me Not's against the granite. Well done. Saw one of those other images in the thread on the k1II noise adjustment threat too.

More from the reversed 18-55 II:

This one's cropped a bit.

At some point I'll have to try it with some extension or a TC just to see what happens. I'll post here if and when I do.

After my first experiment posted above, I decided to use the m 28 instead of the fa 35. This lens is a bit wobbly, but I find it just fine in use. Reversed on the same m 135. I held a bicycle light to add more light.

these are a 55-300 plm with a 501.4 on the end

I found the fly on my sink. Was almost dead but not quite. I stacked 3 images for it. because I had the plm extended to 300mm making it 6x.
The beetle is on a mint leaf and was about 1 mm long.
The caterpillar looks enormous.

I tried putting a 28mm lens on my 2x macro TC. From a rough calculation I achieved a magnification of 1.3:1 (instead of the 1:1 I would have gotten with a 50mm lens)

Lighting is an off-camera manual flash, radio-triggered by another flash on the hotshoe (not firing).

I've read (though never done the tests to confirm it for myself) that slower 50s like f1.8 or f2 make better candidates for reverse stacking lenses. I've simililarly read that leaving the lens on the camera wide open and using the aperture control on the reversed lens gives better performance, too. Here's a link to information on the latter:www.photomacrography.net :: View topic - FAQ: Stopping down a lens combo

Part II
I tried reversing a 50mm on the 2X TC, and the result was about 1.58:1 magnification

I have tried that. The problem in the field is light. The 1.4 wide open on the end f a lens with aperture from the camera gives me maximum light. I need it all. Even on a tripod without light the turning of the aperture is enough to change the distance at such little dof.

The solution is flash.

The problem with a fast lens wide open as your secondary is that the optical aberrations inherent to most fast lenses are magnified too. You get magnification without a corresponding increase in resolution, i.e. "empty magnification".
