That's impressive! Can you estimate the total depth moved (250 steps at Xmm per step - what is X?)

Did you use your new stepping machine? Would you recommend it to others? Did you move the camera or specimen?

X is about 36 μm (the thing was about 9mm long so each step is .036mm).

The stackshot is really convenient but it's definitely only one part of getting results. My (limited) experience is that it's very much the sum of all the parts put together and if you don't have some of them right it's pretty tricky. You have to have the right lens, bellows, x-y stage, bug stage, bug mount, understanding of bug mounting technique, lighting, diffuser, diffuser holder, stacking software, stacking technique and creatures to work with.

On a technical level it's forced me to be a lot more critical and tougher on myself because if you get the tiniest thing wrong you're nowhere. So you have to be REALLY disciplined, allow plenty of time (just the setup for a stack takes me an hr believe it or not) and be prepared to look on eBay for some esoteric and usually pricey items. For example the next direction for me might be to replace my £9 bellows with a swing shift jobbie.

I personally always move the camera because that way the lighting at least stays constant. But, others move the bug, I'm not sure how much this really matters (unless you're working with objectives where it does matter - moving a bug 1mm closer when you only have 9mm of working distance means you're moving it by more than 10% which has all sorts of ramifications)

Yeah, using a Velbon slider just wasn't giving me the newport-like increments I was after so I plumped for that rather than a K5 or some dumb lens I'll never use. I did buy Newport like stages but I'm getting ludicrous quotes from engineering firms to make the connectors between those and a tripod/camera so I went for a slightly more expensive option which avoids all that hassle and I'll end up selling those on I guess. It lets me get into 10x/20x territory too.

Would have been nicer if I knew the faintest thing about how to pose a dead bug... instead the head looks daft. Hmph.

There's nothing about here either - I found some lifting up a rotten trunk on a walk last weekend but other than that it's dead flies, dead flies and more dead flies. Yawn.
