Reversing a 28mm on the 2X TC yelds a massive increase in magnification, around 4.17:1.
The interesting fact is that, while using the M50/1.7 inverted directly on the camera was ok, the M 28/3.5 produced a huge flare right in the middle of the frame. One could reduce its impact with a paper cutout in the shape of a donut, placed on the front element, but it was a stop-gap solution at best.
On the TC, there's no such problem

I use flash i can't see to focus stopped down.

Are you using a camera with live view?

I know what you mean, I remember making this one with my K10D and barely able to see anything through the viewfinder. You can see the reflection of the flash diffuser in the spider's eyes.

Here is another jumping spider. In the bright sunlight there was today, shooting handheld is fine. This was with a reversed pentax-M 28mm/3.5 set to f/8. The light was bright enough to look through the view finder, although it was still pretty dark. I got lucky with the spider resting in place for about 20 seconds.

I used rawTherapee for some postprocessing and a very slight crop.

I am still looking to show off my high-magnification setup at some point, but I have no idea what to shoot with it. I usually use it to shoot small chips, but they don't make a very good object photographically, and there is no way I'll manage to shoot anything alive with that setup. Any advice?

Your jumping spider has a western movie sort of feel. I keep thinking its going to cut to cowboys on horseback riding through a pass.
No ideas for extreme macro. So far the only pic i have that i like is a meter stick or 5mms of it.

LOL! I've always figured that people who put together a H-M setup do it because there's something tiny they really, really want to photograph. Was it the lure of the technical challenge that got you into this fix?

Insects and other small arthropods are a popular subject for extreme macro, in part because they tend to have the kind of extremely fine structures that are interesting at high magnifications. Some flowers are interesting for the same reason. Snowflakes, when available.

Lepidopterid wings are really interesting and beautiful at high magnification. As with any insects, morning is often a good time to find them in a quiescent state. Dead specimens can work well although dust etc. becomes a problem.

In my case it was indeed partially just the challenge of getting higher magnification, but also the technology I work with is sub-millimeter sized (with the smallest features about 1um), so precisely small enough to need higher-than-normal magnification.
That said, my setup is nothing sophisticated at all, especially compared to some of the experts on this forum.

There are lots of natural subjects, from leaves to pollen, and everything in between. Lots of things have probably never been photographed and cataloged at high magnification. Even the foot of a dead insect or spider has features not visible to the naked eye that would be neat to see. I imagine that your primary challenge will be lighting and vibration, not subject material! Look forward to seeing your setup and work!
