The usual complaint is that people find it blah, lacking pixie dust. But I've always liked mine. Admittedly I haven't used it recently; I mainly keep it with the idea that it makes part of a great compact kit with the MX and M50/1.7.

Other than speed, the 3.5 is probably better all around (it's scarcely any bigger than the 2.8, although it is a bit heavier). But the 2.8 is cheap and small, so no harm picking one up and trying it.
BTW I am talking about version I of the M28/2.8.
