Zucchini, Green and Yellow
An older one. Looks like my recent archives with this lens are thin, so I'll have to put it into active use here in the near future.

I recently picked up an A28mm f2.8 to see if there is much difference from my Sigma 28mm f2.8 Mini Wide. All three shots made with the K-1, ISO 3200, f5.6, but the Sigma shots were 1/10 second, the A28 at 1/30 second, and at about the same time of day (actually night, or early morning), but different days. I suppose the best comparison method would involve shooting all the images at the same time of day, on the same day, rather than spread out over a couple of months. The first two were shot last May, a week apart, with the Sigma, the third one (with the A28) was shot yesterday. All three shot hand held.

I also tried to shoot from the same spot, but again, having done the shots at different times, it is impossible to get each shot framed the same. Also, I was in my pickup for the two with the Sigma, at a much higher position than the shot with the A28, shot from my Subaru Legacy wagon, quite a bit closer to the ground.

I tried to keep the post processing the same, following my usual mild adjustments in Photoshop. There was some fog in the shot with the A28, and it can be seen reflecting the high pressure sodium lighting. That may have skewed the colors a bit, I think.

I'll have to go back and shoot it again, both lenses at the same time.

Anyway, here they are.

Hello Racer,
I wonder if the Sigma is not a little brighter and sharper on your samples ... Is it your feeling too ?

On my side I received the tiny SMC Pentax-m 28mm F3.5. It's a very nice lens, not much used, almost mint and optically very good.

Is it as sharp as my Sigma super wide II 24mm ? sometimes yes, sometimes better ?, can't say. But so different in fact. It's not a fast lens, colors are deep, and rendering is like argentics (even mounted on K70). I find the same kind of colours on my 50mm F4 Takumar, same "3d" effect.

I can't always reach the red dot at infinity focus even though horizon is perfect when closing the aperture ring between F8 to F11, seems it's perfectly adjusted (for argentic times).
Every manual control is smooth with a feeling of solidity.

The lack of automatic aperture is disapointing at first on this lens, use of the green button (for exposure) is needed and full manual (focus + mode) too. It's like "Back to the Future", another type of photography, with more time needed and economy of the fire button. But real art, and very relaxing.

Having a good exposure becomes a challenge.

28mm (42mm equiv) is a very nice angle of view.

(it stays on the camera from now)

Well the colors look a bit more saturated, but as I mentioned, the atmospheric conditions were different on the morning I shot the scene with the A lens.

So, I am going to take another swing at comparisons, shooting comparison images at the same time, on the same day. Hopefully that will make the comparison more objective.

Stay tuned . . . . .
