What I like the most about preset lenses is that there are no set stops. I decide manually with visual confirmation the exact amount of light, that I want to get in the photo.

Here is one of my daughter Hedvig taken with my K7 at 1:125s, ISO800 and CZJ 2.8/50 T (12 blades aluminum early fifties version)

Pentacon 3.5/30

Presets of the WA type are sparse (it seems like), besides the Hanimex 28mm f3 Wide Angle Preset, that I have found, there is the Pentacon 3.5/30 (a new version of the Meyer Görlitz Lydith lens) to choose from.
I just got myself one of these (for about 50US), so that I can shoot in the "normal" range on my K7 with a preset lens. I find that it is a quite impressive lens with beautiful, saturated colors, very good contrast, no CA and good sharpness (it´s not a razor).

Here a some walk-around test shots from the other day:

Good images. They look sharp enough to me. What f-stop(s) were you using? I have one of these, too, I think. If I don't I had one. I'll have to look for it. I got it because I particularly like focal lengths between 30 and 40 mm. I also have a preset Takumar 35mm f3.5 and a Mir 1 37mm f2.8 preset. On the Sony Alpha a850 I can take pictures with a full-frame sensor at the stated focal lengths.

Hi Andrew, thanks and yes, they are sharp enough and anyway the preset thing (to me) is much about getting the light exactly right, the way you want it and with visual confirmation in the viewfinder.
Here are a few stats, but not the f-stops, did´t take notes this time, sorry:

1 - 4

1/1000s
ev -0,3
ISO200

1/60s
ev -0,3
ISO800

!/15s
ev -0,3
ISO1600

1/10s
ev auto
ISO1600

Judging from comparing the photos with the lens (which have no scales), I would say about: Photos 1: 8, 2: 4, 3: 8 & 4: 4
Regards

Definition of a preset lens?

Hi all,
Pardon my ignorance...I've tried to google what a preset lens is and cant seem to find a good definition. Is my 1960's Tamron 400mm a preset? No auto aperature, no auto focus. Here is a picture from today out at Lone Elk park near St. Louis.

Is there two aperture rings working interelated with each other?

Here is a classic example of a preset.

Unfortunately the review for the Tamron 400mm is rather confusing and some are not preset.

I have a Tamron 400 7.5 which at first look is similar to that one but the aperture is forward of the focus ring. It is definitely not preset and the one you mention doesn't appear to be. Never mind - it was great that you brought this thread to life - I might have to head out with some of my presets!
