She treated us as the grandparents. ;-) We only went in a handful of times and were very careful not to draw attention from any potential predators.

It's not something I'd do in the wild without really knowing what I was doing. Apart from the risk of drawing the attention of predators, the parents could be spooked and abandon the nest.

But you were still able to use a flash? That's an astonishing amount of trust from the bird.

Yes, a lot of trust, built up over a long period. I've told the story in the yard birds thread at post #910 post #1109 post #1345 post #1371 and post #1473 She would come and land on my partner's head at times. She would take food from us off a spoon: see the 18-135 thread at post #2240 Romola died a couple of months ago. Miss her a lot.

Thanks Grippy. The texture is from soldier crabs I think.

I was out one morning without any macro gear when I came across a busy insect intersection. I shot anyway. DA 35 f2.8 on KP at minimum focus, with a bit of cropping.

This one's got a drop of water on/in its mouth:

...and at 100%.

I haven't used the Plastic Fantastic that much and hadn't expected this sort of result from it. Shame on me! Guessing (correctly!) that maybe some of them would spend the night on this plant, I went back the next day even earlier in the morning (when they'd be colder, slower and easier to shoot) with the 35mm and my Vivitar 2X Macro Focusing Teleconverter. I wasn't quite as bowled over by what I got out of this combination, but that might have been more on me than the gear. Still, I'm glad I tried it. I might try the 35 with some extension just to see what it does...

Here are some 35+TC shots:

Wow. Beautiful shots, guys. I may have to pick one of these up!
Can't go wrong with this lens for the price.

It's great, sometimes regret selling mine, but didn't need both a 35mm and 40mm.
