The lense seems quite good... It's just there so many lenses in the 30-50mm range that we can't have them all

In a few days I will receive my 40XS. It is going with me on my trip to Sardinia next week. The XS on my K5 only... Can't wait to post some results on this thread.
Thank you for the inspiration.

So you guys have any solutions for the lack of a lens hood with this lens? I am thinking of getting step-up rings or de-glassing a 27mm UV filter

Oo, sounds good! Its a nice FoV and the lens can be used for almost anything, nature, landscapes, portraits.. I would still think about bringing along a wider angle, for those tiny village alleys

Do you have issues in practice with the lack of hood? Lack of contrast, flare artifacts ?

Only when I want to be artsy and shoot wide open in bright light
But yes, f3.5 and above the lens needs no hood even in bright light

On the other hand, here is a shot at f3.2, and its seems quite good. Im just one of those people who want a hood on anything

I love this lens - very underrated. Sharp at all apertures and I'm not bothered by its bokeh wide open.

I'll play too! I haven't had the 40XS for long, but it certainly is easy to bring along. It's nice when I want to go light or be unobtrusive. It's a really small combo on my K-x. I probably get more use out of it than the DA 35 f2.4 or the DA 50 f1.8. The lens cap isn't the greatest, so I got a nice little 27mm snap on cap. (Search for "27mm snap on lens cap" at ebay. I got mine for $.71) Works great.
Just a sample shot at f7.1 on my K-30. It may not be so clear in the attached example, but it is really sharp in the original.

the DA 40mm Xs was the first prime I purchased once I owned the K-5. To me, the quality and performance coupled with its compact size make it my "go-to" lens that has stayed on my camera for months at a time, and always in my camera bag.

Since I got my DA 40 XS it is the only lens I've used. On the negative side I only got it Thursday night.

I lost the lens cap twice already both times in my pocket. I had second thoughts when I bought it alone with a K01 on this forum but the combo fits in the one big spot that was free in my bag. My K01 has been converted to IR. I still need to try the lens out on the K5iis and the MZ7.

The reason I questioned myself for buying it was having the DA 35 and F 50 1.7 but the small size and low price convinced me it would be worth it.
