I finally broke down and bought one. You can almost take pictures in the dark.

Let me get caught up and I will try to contribute to this thread.

Both of the 50's you presently have are good, but I think you're going to be totally amazed at the clarity, sharpness and color saturation of the DA 50mm f:1.8. Unbelievable!

Colors

Of all the lenses I own, the DA 50mm f:1.8 is without a doubt the best at color rendition and saturation of the entire lot! Sliders in-camera were all at "neutral" settings. No PP.

I've had this lens almost 2 years now, and I can live with the plastic mount, noisy focus motor, and no distance scale. But, the more I use it the more I really wish it had weather seals so I could use it in the rain, and that it had quick shift for easier switching to manual focusing. Does anyone else have these same feelings?
I know this post is 8+ months old, but thought I would reply anyway...

For my use, I would want distance/DOF scale, 49mm threads, and quick shift. A simple scale could be printed on at low cost. Even the DA L zooms have distance scales! The presence of 52mm threads truly baffles me. Quick shift would definitely be wonderful, I agree.

At its current price of ~$100 USD, I can't really complain. But when I bought it new it was still around double that, as I recall.

All things considered, I still love this lens. Very good manual focus IMHO for being a plastic AF lens. Very small. Hood optional. Great IQ. Awesome price (in the US, currently... the price it should have been all along to compete with other companies' 50/1.8s).

Personally, I love mine and I can live with it FOREVER, JUST LIKE IT IS! It's THAT good! If it were in the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, it would take "BEST IN SHOW!" for it's class and price. About as close to perfection for a lens that costs less than $125.00 that's ever been manufactured! This is of course, just IMHO.

Not sure how I missed these but you sure are making that K-r shine. The first one is my favorite.

There are some great photos in here. I've been wanting this lens for a while. I finally bought one from a member here. I've just played around with it a little. I'll post the obligatory cat shot. I got some of my daughter at the same time, making some very unladylike faces at me. She told me I'm not allowed to post those. I thought those were the best. lol

Edit to add, the pictures on here don't look quite as sharp as they do on my computer. Weird. Oh, well.

Yeah, I paid nearly double for mine too, but at its current $100 price tag there is not much to realistically complain about. That being said, my DA 50mm 1.8 rarely gets used anymore after I acquired a Super Takumar 50mm 1.4. At wide apertures the DA 50mm 1.8 never auto-focuses on my K30 with the precision I demand from it (even after focus calibration its focus can be hit or miss sometimes), and since there is no quick shift I now prefer to just rely on my eyes and my Super Tak. The feel and operation of those old Takumars just makes photography so pleasing! I'd sell my DA 50mm 1.8 if the price hadn't dropped so much, but since there's really no point to let it go for such a loss I let it stick around in the camera bag.

Thank you! I've just gotten into photography so I'm relatively new to all this. But I've learned that with the right lens and software, even a K-r can put out some fantastic images. Oh and the first shot was of a random girl that I ran across while out shooting scenery, she ended up being my model for a few minutes. lol
