Although the DA 20-40 has replaced my Tamron 17-50/2.8 A16 for travel and walkaround,
I'm still using the Tamron as my event lens,
where speed and range trump rendering, flare resistance and compactness.
How do you find the two lenses compare in terms of IQ, sharpness, contrast and bokeh lytrytyr? I have the Tamron at present but am planning on upgrading to the 20-40mm for travel photography. Would be interested to hear how they compare...

Cheers, Magnus

For IQ, sharpness, contrast, they're fully comparable.

I have to use CDAF in live view
to get the best out of my copy of the Tamron at all focal lengths,
and for the wide end of the DA 20-40.

I find the DA 20-40 far superior, within its more restricted scope,
for bokeh, flare resistance, and general rendering.

There's an aesthetic pleasure to most of the Limited's images
which is rarely seen in the output from the Tamron.

Thanks lytrytyr, that's very helpful. The rendering of the Tamron is what fails to excite me...
I know it's a technically very good lens, but even my 35mm f2.4 seems to render comparative situations far more beautifully.
It's a lot of cash but I think I'll go for the 20-40mm, life's too short etc. :-)

Eric. I am curious about the history of the place where you captured these images. Some very interesting and intriguing tools and equipment. do you know the background?

This is the last intact blacksmith shop that is in Johnstown, PA, which is my hometown. The shop was built in 1864 ans was part of the Cambria Iron Works. In the 1920's Bethlehem Steel purchased the steel making in Johnstown. All operations were shut down in 1992. The shop is not open to the public, I had a special tour set up for my URBEX photo group. The Johnstown Heritage Association has plans to turn this into a working shop again, but for iron artisans. Here is a link with more of the history and information on some of the equipment.

Here are a few more shots from last weekend. IMHO, this is an excellent for my style of shooting. I'm seriously thinking of selling off my DA40 ltd.

Love your shots, and the look of this lens. It's not in my future (unless that future includes an unexpected financial windfall), but if I were in the market for a premium zoom it would be at the top of my list.

Lens finally arrived

Good dog-walking weather today. Images are OOC JPEGS with no PP to get a feel for the lens.

New 20-40 user here, , ,

Hi gang! New 20-40 fan here. I traded out a few primes to fund this zoom. It better fits my style of shooting by not having to change lenses so often. I didn't give up much in the way of IQ either.

Thought I would post a few shots I took the other day with a boating theme.

This lens, with a polarizer, is killer!
