Not long ago I acquired Carl Zeiss Jena MC Sonnar Electric 135 mm F 3.5. So here are my first impressions.
Build quality. Top notch. The barrel is made mostly of metal, with the exception of the aperture ring and Auto / Manual switch. I had to have my lens serviced, because the focusing ring was extremely stiff and infinity started around 10 meter mark. After the service everything functions perfectly. The built in lens hood is quite a useful feature, although I think, that a larger hood, when mounted on APS-C would be better.
Handling. Although the lens is far from being the lightest device (lens + k3 weighs around 1200 gramms) it is quite compact and easy to use hand-held. The focus throw is quite long, but it makes precise focusing on shorter distances easier. At f3.5 infinity focusing can be quite tricky. You would expect it to start after the 30 meters mark on the barrel. In reality it roughly is several hundred meters away. At f5.6 no such behaviour is observed, although I would like to point out that "sharpest" infinify starts somewhat further than the promised 30 meters on the barrel.
Optical properties. The lens is quite sharp starting from the widest aperture and sharpness seems uniform across the frame. Chromatic aberrations are quite strong in certain situations, but Lightroom handles them quite well. The images produced by the lens have good colours and contrast. Yet I would like to point out, that it largely depends on the software you use for post processing. The lens handles backlight relatively well, yet I would not call the results exceptional.
