I plan to compare a couple of long lenses and post results on the forum. Looking at the pictures I really like the fish hook with line the best. It seems to really highlight the difference especially on the lines. I think I would do a series with manual focus using focus peaking along with auto focus.
The guard rail shots also look very informative.

I would appreciate your thoughts on test shots to compare long lenses.

Without the TC the DA 10-16 vignettes badly below about 14mm. The attached images are at 10mm with almost no vignetting.. On A7II Excuse the dust. Xpost from Pentax on FF club.

I fought with mine as well. Some would be track sharp, so not the lens/tc. I finally figured it was shutter vibration. At about 1/1600 it is fine, but we rarely have enough light for that. I sold mine to partly fund a sigma 500 4.5.

That cannot be. I have thousands of pixel sharp images with the K-3, DA*300 and HD 1.4X TC, below 1/1000s shutter speed.

Interesting that the EXIFs show like only one TC was used (784mm), where the stack of 2 TC's should have been something like 1098mm...

But the results are pretty impressive !

Quick astro shot with DA*300 and 1.4 HD TC

10x guided astrotracer shots at 10secs 6400ISO each. Stacked and averaged in Photoshop. A slight crop.

More shots (many more) to stack would have been better, but the clouds rolled in!

Thanks! The bird on the last one should be "European goldfinch". It's a rare visitor, he's not showing himself often (well at least not in our garden).

I seem to suddenly not be able to achieve the quality I was getting for garden bird shots with this combo (K-3, DA*300, 1.4 HD TC), and I wonder what I am doing wrong. Think I may need to start with lens calibration.

Concerning the settings, I think there's nothing special to be mentioned.

I usually shoot in AF.S (continuous shooting(H)) and TAv mode.
Starting with 1/1000 and F5.6 or 6.3.
AutoISO - 100-max. 6400.
AWB.
In worse light conditions I increase exposition up to +1EV.

SR ON, monopod is a good friend.
Many times I focus manually (AF is sometimes hunting on DA*300 (or K-3?), more with than without 1.4x TC).

But probably the most important point is trying to get close (to avoid excessive cropping). I received this hint here on the forum some time ago, so now I'm only passing it on...
