Caught a few shots of our neighborhood hawk, probably a red-shouldered hawk, surveying the creekbed from a tree.

K5iis+DA*300 f4+1.4x. handheld but bolstered, pp'ed, with a cropped center for comparison

Don't you hate that? You try to be quiet and still. The moment you take one more step forward, the bird goes 10 steps further back.

Exactly. We played this game for a while, then the bird said "bye for now" and flew off. Even more frustrating that I could not follow him

Btw. I like this small bird (your 3rd shot) a lot. Is it adult or kid?

Thank you. It's a Ruby Crowned Kinglet. I believe it is an adult because of the red patch on its head.

That is the difference between the herons that are truly wild and the ones we see at our local nature park that are used to people and confident they will not be bothered.
I can get much closer to them at the park than I can at the wetlands a few miles away.

FF

Has anyone tried the HD 1.4 on a FF camera to see if the rumored ability to use crop lenses like the DA 21 on ff is true?

Ok. I can answer my own question. I just tried the HD 1.4 AF with the DA 15 on a Sony A7ii. Only had time to view it on the LCD but the frame was bright from side to side and in the corners. I will test it more fully this weekend.

Finally did some testing with the F*300mm f4.5 and the HD TC 1.4x last sunday... (xposted)

I was using a monopod
SR was on

@ F6.7 F8 and F11 respectively... Just applied AutoTone in LR5 no other PP.

My conclusion is it is a bit soft at F6.7, better stopped down just a bit , but it really renders the IQ of that fabulous lens... I used to use the AFA 1.7x with the F*300, but @ 420mm ...
this HDTC delivers !

Various shots of an ice ring on the canal...

Thanks for posting those shots with the F*300 Weevil! Looks like a good combination.

I couldn't wait (or afford) the Pentax TC so I picked up one of the highly rated Tamron 1.4x ones and tried it with the F*300 last weekendand was very impressed with the quality at 420mm - on par with the A400mm and considerably smaller. Maybe one day I'll spring for the Pentax TC though as it works better with the focus mechanisms of older Pentax lenses and the newer DA ones.

A few with the TC and DA*60-250. I had it on, realized I was shooting at 252mm, and took it off for the rest of the images.

I admire those shots taken with lenses/TC combo

but .... I have no idea why I have yet to get ONE single decently sharp image with this TC and my DA*300/4.
Well ... maybe one or two half decent among maybe 50 to 60 shots.

I have, and regularly use, the same combo. Post some examples. This is the club. Let's figure it out.
