Keeping up with a two year old with a M-120/2.8 -- Underrated lens. It has some CA wide open ... but it's tiny, light, and has a built-in hood. Best focusing lens I own; hardest to focus subject I know!

Tomorrow I will get my second M lens - another 50mm, this time the f4 macro. I have a couple other lenses that are capable of 1:2 macro, but this one is allegedly very sharp.

Hi everyone,
AS can be seen in my signature I don't have an M50 and would like to complete the series in the future.

So a question: which one is better 1.4 or 1.7 and why?

All information and comments will be appreciated.

Get both! The 1.4 is a bit faster than the 1.7 and about double the price, give or take. Some say the bokeh or sharpness is better on one over the other - you'll get a thousand different opinions. Some will say the depth of field of the 1.4 is even thinner than the razor-thin DOF of the 1.7. Check out the lens reviews section for some opinions. I love my 1.7 (and even my f/2), but I'll be looking for a 1.4 soon so I can complete my set of M50's.

By the way, this discussion should probably be moved to Lenses before it gets too long-winded....

Thanks Paul,

I would really like to have all the Pentax lenses but $$$$$ is not here to accommodate my LBA.

I just want to complete my M set with a 50. So I will wait for other comments since I am not in a rush.

P.S. I already have a K50/1.4

If you have a K50/1.4 -- the M50/1.4 won't be any different optically. So, go with the 1.7 -- it's the close cousin of the 55/1.8, according for every source I've seen. It tends to be "colder", but I think it's sharper until at least f2. (I have an 50: A/1.,7 A2, F/1.7 and SMC Tak 1.4, so I speak from direct experience as well!)

I'm new to M & DSLR

I've only been shooting DSLR for about 4 months. I knew nothing coming into it. I purchased a K20D and love it. I got a SMC 50M 1:1.4 on Saturday. I spent the day figuring out how to use it. Is there a thread on some tips of how to get the most out of them.
Trying to get the right EV without metering is the hardest for me unless there is something I'm missing.

Welcome to the DSLR world. There are tons of discussions about how to meter with old Pentax lenses and new Pentax DLSRs. Try a search in this forum using "green button" as keywords.
