SMC Pentax M 400/5.6

I haven't posted much in this area of late.

Took the old M 400/5.6 out into the cold today. Nothing special - just a few very common birds in this part of Ontario.

They were kind enough to pose or maybe they were frozen like I was.

This guy was just lurking in the branches and I liked the way the light struck him.

Orion and the Orion Nebula (left of the tree) last night before the moon came up. Shot with the 50/1.4 @ about f/4

Great work. Those two starbursts are almot too much for me to handle. Really nice.

Great shots!

Also some of the best IQ I've seen from the M400 - I've always felt other peoples' efforts have been disappointing. Any special focusing/steadying techniques?

Thanks Rob,

I appreciate the comment but I've seen some pretty good stuff from Canada Rockies and Goddo31 as well.

In any case, I find I have to plan ahead to get the best from this lens. I always try to keep the sun at my back and shoot in the early morning or late afternoon. This helps cut down on some of the CA and PF issues with this optic. The images above were all late afternoon. I scout out areas I know birds are likely to be found and arrange my positioning accordingly. This is not the lens for you if you want quick snapshots. For myself hand holding this lens is out of the question and I always use a monopod and the highest shutter speed possible. The K5's increased dynamic range has helped a lot in this area although some of my best shots with this lens came with the K10. That's about it besides practicing a lot and expect a lot of failures - a lot of failures.

Nice ones Paul! I've been looking for that lens, smc-m 75-150, how would you rate that? As far as I've read it's so darn portable and IQ is very very very good...

Thanks, Rick. If you like the M-style rendering, then you'll like this lens. Very sharp wide-open, nice colors & saturation. Great build quality as you would expect, has a built-in hood & uses 49mm filters. It's a bit heavy, and extends out pretty far. (You pull in for tele, push out for wide, lens length doesn't change) Min. focusing distance is pretty long, about 3 ft or so. It's kind of an odd focal range, too. I haven't used it a whole lot since buying it last summer, but it's on the *istD now & I hope to give it some work this week

edit: Here's a couple shots of the lens to go with my mini-review:
