Here's a good example of the M 50/1.7's awesome flexibility when it comes to depth of field. I was able to capture the subject (my buddy Christian) while spreading a nice layer of bokeh of the immediate foreground and the background proceeding him. This was also shot in low light on a K30.

Sodapop - check out the post on bringing Flickr images to the site. I thing you need to pick up the BB Code field not the URL.

Hah! Thanks. I just saw that it said BBCode and copied it. Didn't see the radio button, haha.

Cool photo sodapop! Got a M50mm 1.4 yesterday. Its great indoors and out, and its produced quite interesting and to me unusual bokeh on this photo...

Pentax M 50mm f/1.4

My little girl Ava showing off her two teeth. I have been thinking of upgrading my lens to the DA 50mm f/1.8 but I guess my present lens does a good job already. Any thoughts?

You already have some excellent 50 mm glass. If you need to use the aperture control in the camera, the A 50/1.7 is probably as good as the new 55/1.8, and a bit shorter. I see absolutely nothing wrong with the image you just posted.

Thanks a lot for your response. I was considering getting a DA 50mm/1.8 mainly for its AF feature, but I probably don't need AF yet. I am nearly 70 but my sight and hands are still sharp and steady, respectively. Warm regards from Down Under.

I went through 73 in June, and after they operated on my cataracts, I was back to manual focusing well again. You have AF in your lens lineup - the A 50 - the only thing you would gain with the DA 55 would be SDM. Most people (other than the photographer whose ears are two inches from the lens motor) don't even notice gear drive AF.

55 is equivalent to 77, 50 is equivalent to 70, so there isn't even that much difference in perspective.

My A 50mm f/1.7 has auto exposure but not AF. I prefer the M 50 f/1.4 because I like working with the aperture ring. The aperture ring on the A 50 is not as well built or as smooth to use.

Shot with a smc Pentax-M 50mm 1.7 on a K-30. This is my first lens outside of the kit. I've been shooting for about two months.

I love the look and feel of this lens -- it puts my kit lens to shame without a doubt. The bokeh is phenomenal.
These are both fantastic photos. Great work 8)
