Possibly because there are two versions of it. The first version I gather is rather so-so while the later version is essentially the A 28/2.8 without the A's aperture information. I have the M28/2.8 version 2 plus the M28/3.5. I prefer the 3.5 overall but it also depends on the colours of the scene. I think the 2.8 does the reddish end of the spectrum better while the 3.5 does blues well.
I had both and I liked v1 better - more vivid colors, more pleasing rendering. Of course that could just have been my copy of those lenses. Sharpness to me was about the same - not great wide open, better at f4, great at f5.6 and f8.

Both were sold and I kept the Rikenon XR 28 2.8 instead. Great lens, sharp from wide open.

Here's a recent shot taken with the M35-70/2.8-3.5. It's a bit of a beast to handle, but I really love the sharpness and rendering. It's not a bokeh monster or a close focuser, but it's become one of my favorite Ms.

I've also owned and sold both. V1 produced flat, dull photos and I didn't like it at all. V2 was sharper with better contrast and colour but on film had quite a lot of distortion. I sold both and now have the K 28/3.5 (superb I but big and heavy), a Vivitar 28/2 (very good IQ, nice and fast but also quite big and heavy) and a Sigma 28/2.8 (very sharp) in case I need something small and light. I hear it flares badly but haven't tested it much yet.

I haven't found a manual, compact Pentax 28mm lens yet that I really like. I think for that you really need to go third-party.

I loved the m28 V1 on film. For years, it was my favorite lens matched with the K1000. By the time I got around to using it on digital, I already taste of top shelf digital lenses like the DA 12-24, and compared to that lens, the V1 can seem a bit flat on digital, and after giving it a spin with the old K200D, I replaced it with a K 28 f3.5. Still, the m28 v1 is a decent enough lens (very nice on film), just not up to the usual high Pentax SMC prime standard. Here's the only two pics I could find in my digital image library shot with the m28 V1:

This park is still flooded, although the water levels have lowered. Evidence of high water can be seen on the roof of the picnic area. Photo was taken from a small observation tower. M35-70/2.8-3.5

Old shot from M28 f2.8 on K-30, recently took delivery of a M28 f3.5, looking forward to play around with it(hopefully on K-1)

We had some calamari the other night, so naturally I tried to reconstruct a squid. How'd I do?
