100mm Macro

I've got a Pentax-M 100mm Macro f4 lens, its a really nice little lens. I find the contrast to be a bit low directly out of the camera, but a quick adjustment in Lightroom takes care of it nicely. The bokeh is lovely, even tho its only f4.

So smooth bokeh!!!

This little guy is about 2 cm tall.

Sorry, I couldnt help but to post a bunch of pics. Its one of two manual lenses I own, and I really love the build quality, focusing, and IQ of this lens! Superb.

The K 85/1.8 is rare, expensive and lustworthy. I'd still prefer the car, though...

I also have a M 100mm f/4. Some examples I shot this morning. Any perceived unsharpness is purely my fault as I am unwell today and I didn't drag out my tripod.

Clock.

Golf ball.

Shell.

My lunch money.

SMC Pentax M 400mm 5.6

I haven’t posted anything in the M Club for a while. I just received an M series 400mm 5.6 telephoto the other day. That is my old Pentax MX with winder attached to give a sense of scale.

The weather is brutal at the moment so I’ve been forced to experiment indoors. Not a lot of shots possible indoors with a 400mm! I mounted the brute on the tripod and took dead aim on the entertainment areas. A few DVDs:

Not a lot of DOF with a lens of this length. I focused on Mr. Blandings Builds his Dream house. I was on a angle and you can see how quickly DOF drops off.

Next some vintage classical LPs I purchased about the same time this lens was new around 1980. Seems pretty sharp when mounted on a tripod.

I'll be back when the weather gets better and I've had a chance to put the lens through its paces.

Pentax M 400 Goes Birdiing

I posted some of these in another area but they seem to fit here as well. I was playing around in front of the house with the 400mm 5.6 putting the lens through its paces when a Perigrine falcon or Sharp Shinned Hawk (not sure which) I’ve been trying to get a shot of for some time landed on a nearby fence. Rats! No tripod or monopod and no time to fetch one either. This opportunity may not come again. So I braced myself against the car and blasted away. I was shooting into the sun but did the best I could under the circumstances. Lots of shake, PF and CAs. In any case here’s what I got hand held:

And a kid riding by on his bike.

400 M goes birding - nice job!

Hand holding a 400mm is a feat in itself! Good job, glad to see there are others like me who would rather not miss the opportunity even if the end result is not perfection. I find hand holding my FA 80-320 a chore at the 320 end.

I must have a look around for a 400 / 500 lens to add to my the collection.

Thanks gmcotton. I'm under no illusions about these being great images. I don't plan on making a habit of hand holding this beast but when the local raptors drop by you have to go for the shot. This is my first foray into the realm of the "super telephoto" length. I have no other lens that would have allowed me to get close enough to this bird for any kind of image.

Good shooting Tom. The reds in backlit are what I find with mine, as well, but for the price and length of time I have had this lens, I can't complain at all. I do find that a stop or two closed helps a lot.

Here are some shots with my "new" old M20 F4 (had it since it was new), I actually cleaned the aperture blade on it.
So now it's working properly again

Water!

It was rather wet outside, and the light was dull, so I stayed in and took some photos of the water coming out of the kitchen sink tap. Pentax M 50 Macro 1:4 and AF280 flash. These are first tries, the only post-processing I've done is to adjust exposure and to crop. Next time, I will try different water pressures, and also try putting lights or different coloured items nearby to get some more reflections. The effect is pretty surreal.

First, running the tap slow:

Next running it fast:

These were taken at f11, but getting the focus right was a bit of an issue.
