I had the M50 macro mounted on the 1.4x-S converter earlier in the day, and ended up trying it on some landscapey photos. I will have to try this again, as the shots were way soft. I don't remember the lens being this bad at infinity, so I'm hoping I just had it misfocused.

EXIF says 70mm focal length. Could be SR problem due to wrong focal length. I recently had a bunch of similarly ruined shots when I shot M28 with camera set to 100mm.

Setting SR for 70mm makes sense for a 50mm coupled to a 1.4x TC. But yes, get the SR focal length setting way off and it don't work so well.

It's not my best M lens... in fact I think it's actually the worse... don't know if it's my copy or if it's supposed to be like that... it's comparable to my 80-200/4.5 at 200mm.
I think M50/2 is the worst prime, but 200 is one of the weaker lenses in the line up. Not all can be among the best
Very prone to CA and not as sharp as the best M lenses. If you can live with that it's a usable lens with nice bokeh and rendition. Very cheap for it's focal length. I had a nice month with it in April Single In Challenge. I shot wide open a lot more than I typically do: SIC 2018 04 Pentax M200/4 | Flickr
Still from what I've seen the K version is better.

True. I forgot that 1.4x TC. But results looked similarly poor as my work with 28. None of the shots were worth saving.

I accidentally had SR off while using my M200 in poor light a while back and wondered for a while why the resolution was so poor. Camera shake! I've gotten so used to taking as granted the wonder of SR that it was a bit of a shock to see how crap I was without it.

Yeah, about the K version that was my understanding as well.
I prefer the 80-200 overall (almost the same, but more flexible), but the 200/4 was my father's (I "stole" them all... he uses a megazoom now... bleah... ), so I will never sell it.

To be honest I don't really use mine either. Don't really need that focal length between 120 and 300.

It's true, for your shooting style you probably don't need long lenses, just like you said. I love 'em

How's you aperture mechanism, is it smooth? My copy is sluggish; I've posted about my failed attempt at cleaning it... lens still works and I do love it!

I've read that this model has a lot of problems with slow aperture, but this seems to be in great shape in every way.

I agree... the M200 is easily the worst one I have in terms of sharpness at least. But it's so cheap, it wouldn't be worth my time to pack it up and sell it. It also has some strange allure even though I it's weak that I can't quite place. I'm using it on film right now for the monthly film challenge, so couple poor quality lens on poor quality media with a poor photographer who develops film poorly, and you're in for a real treat my friends!
