I've had my eye open for an M 20/4 for quite a few years but have yet to see one for a price I'd go for. I found the Cosina 19-35 and then the Tokina 17/3.5 have provided ultra-wide lenses for film use at a far lower price, and in the case of the Tokina, considerably wider than the M too.

Nice colours and great bokeh. Thanks for sharing.

A nightscape taken with the M50/1.4 at around f/8 to get some starbursts. I like this one for the colours in the sky, even when, as an amateur astronomer I despise the light polution that causes this.

I had the M50/1.4 in my film days. Saw one yesterday in nice shape. I've got so many lenses in the 50mm family that I think my next Pentax addition may be the K50/1.4. I guess until the M falls in my lap...

Be strong, resist that LBA. I know you can do this. Really. You don't need another 50 mm lens. It's a wonderful little lens. I can't compare it to the K50/1.4 (I only have the K135/2/5), but I like it a lot and I find myself using it much more than the M50/1.7 I also have. Not sure exactly why, though. I believe Ismo did a side-by-side comparison of these two lenses once.

I'm not so much into side by side comparisons. Real life tests are more into my taste. Both f1.4 and f1.7 are fine lenses. Either do fine and one does not really need both. Now that I have them I choose f1.4 for wide open shooting and f1.7 for general use stopped down. This is a bit of heresy, but if I do get K/A 50/1.2 at somepoint both will mostly sit on my shelf.

I'm supposed to write reviews of these too, but it feels such dull pasttime that I've managed to postpone it 4 months already. There's a high risk I forgot to do it altogether.

I would much rather use a lens than review it.

I'm sorry, I was referring to a real-life use/comparison of the two lenses, not a review in the strict sense I guess. I remember you did something like that sometime ago.

I agree, but you could use it and review it. In general, I prefer these types of hands-on-in-the-field-reviews to the lab testing with a resolution chart.

No problem. I just tried to clarify my lack of interest towards test charts

There's at least the wrap up at the end of my single in month with M50/1.4: The M Club! - Page 540 - PentaxForums.com
I think the notion that 1.4 is portrait fifty and 1.7 landscape fifty is a good way to describe the lenses. F4 naturally being the macro fifty and f2 the cheaper version of f1.7.

I think I would sell my M 50 1.4 to partially fund the purchase of a 50 1.2 (or maybe 3rd party 55 1.2) but I would keep my M 50 1.7. It's such a slim lens and the sharpness wide open is great on film.
