I have had too little to post here this year, so took up M40-80 macro zoom this month in Single In Challenge. After 2 days I have mixed feelings. Zoom feels more hassle than help. Too much going on simultaneously for a simple man. Prime and pair of feets feels so much easier to control. It's not super sharp either, but there's something special character in rendering.

Macro wide open:

Agree - might be worth hanging on to for awhile...

Ants in their environment, Pentax M 50mm 1.7

Photo showing ants in their environment. Pentax K1 II and the Pentax M 50mm F1.7, i love the bokeh of this lens and the feeling of doing it 100% manuelly.

Doesn't seem like the out of focus highlights have that "onion ring" effect to them, right? I agree about manual focus zooms feeling like a lot of controls to deal with at once. That lens might be nice for portraits and other short-tele shots on APS-C though if you can take your time.

I think I paid around 10 for it. I don't expect to get anything by selling so might as well keep it.

More from 40-80:

I don't know what onion ring effect looks like.

Here's a pretty awful example of what some call onion ring bokeh;

That's from a pretty current Tamron long zoom.

From the example in your post about, #8671, from what I can see from here the out of focus highlights look very smooth without a strong edge ring effect or the internal "onion rings" like in the image I found and shared here.

Interesting. Never seen such rendering before and for certain there's no such thing in M40-80 OOF highlights.

That's a great shot and you have encouraged me to get out my old manual focus lenses.

An other set from last saturday M28/2.8. I walked down by the river and came back thru swamp trail which gave a whole different scenery thought it goes only about 100m from the river.

I had K3 and M*300 as second kit on the swamp week ago. Mostly in case I had encountered something interesting in the right distance, but it didn't happen. So took some swamp shots with it so I didn't carry it for nothing.
