M 400 f/5.6 with F 1.7X AF meets Mallard

I have to add my M 400/5.6 bird in flight photo. It was meant to be two birds in flight, but Mrs. Mallard flew out the left of the frame before I could get focused. Mr. Mallard was caught in hot pursuit.

Albert, those birds don't like to wait do they...

How do you find the M400 goes with the 1.7AF TC? Does it auto-focus?
And would you say the IQ is degraded noticeably?

cheers,

cheers,
I can get it to auto-focus if the light is very bright and the contrast is high. With the f/5.6 of the old M 400, even then it's a bit hesitant. The particular image above looks nice, but is quite soft when blown all the way up. There is a full size jpeg on my Flickr site with full EXIF still there. [All Sizes] > [Original]. I cannot really blame the 1.7X for this. Here is a 100% crop that shows what kind of image can be gotten using the M 400 and 1.7X together.

Good light (Aug 22/2009, 2:30 MDT, Latitude 53 34' N), monopod, ISO 400, 1/180", f/8 set on the lens = f/13.6, Manual exposure, subject North of camera.

well the M 85mm arrived, but sadly its to dark outside to get anything usable. I look forward to testing this lens tomorrow, and will post my results.

I got this lens a couple of weeks ago but I have had no time to test it thoroughly. However, I will have great opportunity next week.....a baroque/renaissance ensemble will play in a small theater close to where I live, and they're using "authentic" instruments and clothes.

Kind regards
.lars

overall im impressed. It isn't overly sharp wide open which is usually desired in portraiture anyways, so its perfect. Stopped down, well I dont think you can get much better than that
