Tom, Albert,
If it wasn't for the real bargain price and a bit of luck I wouldn't have found my M400. Originally I was thinking of an A 400 5.6 but the price would have been about 5x more! It really is great fun to use and rewarding when the final image works out.

Albert that crop really is quite impressive, plenty of detail there.

cheers,
Thanks, Jason. I picked it specifically to show what old glass can do. For once in my life I got the focus right.

Ok, here are a couple of my shots with the M400 F5.6 on film. Not terribly exciting, these are just some ducks from the local pond. They were a bit too friendly and kept coming too close!
Photos scanned by a generic photo shop and resized, not edited or cropped in any other way...

Yeah, the M has a problem with the 5 meter (16.5 foot) close focus limit. If I know I don't need infinity focus, I attach the 50mm tube to the back of the lens and can focus a bit closer.

Wow! Just recently found this thread. Amazing! I just got a M Series 35-70mm 2.8 lens. It's got that auto focus engine outside the lens. Not sure if I can ever make it work on my K20D but with these images taken with M lenses! Think I'll start collecting them too.

Thanks folks!

It will never auto focus on your K20D, but it will work just fine as a manual focus lens. Keep it, and keep an eye out for an ME-F body. It would be a fun camera to have. People may ask you what it is, and you can say, "Oh, this is my 1977 Pentax auto focus SLR." I think it was about 1977.

The camera and lens were introduced in 1981. Still the first mass produced autofocus 35mm SLR I believe, though.

If it's an M lens, it has no AF mechanism whatsoever, inside or outside the lens. You might be seeing the aperture lever and thinking it related in some way to AF, but it's not. It's a manual focus lens, period.

To make an M lens work with a Pentax DSLR, see the stick thread on that topic at the top of the Beginner's forum. It's a straightforward but very non-obvious process.

I think you're thinking too hard about this. He's referring to this lens:

Pentax Lens Review and Specification Database - 35-70mm F2.8

Which has the same exact styling as an M series lens, just has the letters "AF" where "M" belongs.

Thanks for the date correction. It was a neat camera, but very heavy with those batteries under the lens.

[langtitle=nl]My Collection[/langtitle]

I just signed in today after reading this thread, and would like to show my "collection".

I'm new to pentaxes, just bought my K10D new 2 months ago. was a left over in a Dixons shop.

Just bought the 4th lens today (the 200mm F4).

Hereby a photo of the group:

Picture taken with another (package deal) M 1:1.7/50mm

If I can get my hands on a 300 or 400mm I will buy a fifth lens, but for now it's enough.

Greetings,

Herman

Herman, search this thread for the M 400/5.6. Each of three of us are constantly amazed at how goo the other two find this lens to work. The old rule of thumb was double or halve the focal length between lenses to get enough difference to really count. You have 200, you need 400. And 100.

Careful Herman.

Albert's advice, if taken to its logical conclusion, leads to a whole bag full of lenses. Not that this is a bad thing mind you.
