That shot is excellent, Tom! Great detail, environment and food aspects to complement the subject Do you know what it is?

Thanks Jason,

The bird is a female Red Wing Blackbird. I think lunch was some sort of a bee or a wasp.

She was getting kind of stressed by my presence as you can see from this shot...

so I left the area.

What to do on a winter's day. In May.

On a miserable sleety/snowy day here in the very wet Rocky Mountains of Canada, I became envious of the weather shown by my fellow M 400 users, but it was not really a great day to go outdoors. So I had a peek at the hummingbird feeder outside our North facing living room window. The feeder is under the roof overhang, so the lighting is never the best, and it's even worse when wet snow is falling on May 30th!!!! Claire really jumps up the sugar level in the mix when the weather is this cold. The little guys and gals need every calorie they can get in weather like this. As I type this at 11:26 am, the thermometer outside says 2.9 C while wet snow is falling.

Out with the Manfrotto 055B legs, 0168 ball head, SMC-Pentax M 400mm f/5.6 and K10D. No way I can focus close enough without sitting inside the fireplace. The M 400's close focus is 5m/16.5ft. Add the 50mm extension tube to set the focus to about 4m/12 ft. ISO 400, 1/90", f/11 + whatever the tube adds (f/16?) cropped to 58% (2262x1520 px), noise reduced using Topaz deNoise4.1. Did I mention the lack of light? Under the eaves? on the North? With snow falling? Hmmm - wonder why I needed to reduce the noise.

Anyway, fellow M enthusiasts, pending weather that will give me enough light for these guys, here he is, sticking his tongue out at me. I think he knows how much trouble I'm having, here.

I have been experimenting a little with Topaz Denoise 4. It's a great software!
These pics were shot at ISO 1600 and some of them were pushed 1 EV in PP.
That's ISO 3200....using the "noisy" k10d.

Lens: M 85mm F2.

Kind regards
.lars

I used it on the hummingbird to good effect. +2 stops on K10D at ISO 1600. The hummer is a few posts up on this page.

Steller's Jay - M 400/5.6

This is a regular back yard visitor. The bird is the official provincial bird of British Columbia. K10D + M 400/5.6 @ ISO 400, 1/90 @ f/8, Tripod, S/R off. The shutter speed is really too low for this fellow. He moves with very jerky motions that just blur out. It's another dark cloudy day here.

That's a gorgeous bird Albert. Nothing like that in my backyard. Too bad the light didn't cooperate. As you can see, instead of birds I've got rabbits today.

This guy dropped in for a snack.

I love the way the light shows up his ear. Great capture, Tom.

M 135

This Babbler sat on the wipers of the car and I was lucky to have the M135 on my K-7 at that time.
Clearly shows why the M's are the sharpest.

Tom - the rabbit looks great, nice job. And Albert, nice spotting of such an official bird

I spotted this strange flying creature yesterday afternoon:

Nice shot Jason,

I keep trying but my attempts at moving targets with the 400 never work out that well. Well done.

Aye, the M 28mm F/3.5 arrived!

I know I haven't posted legitimate photo's in weeks, but rather tests, so I apologize as this is no different (for now).

I thought the 28mm would be perfect to attempt to use the HDR feature on the K-7 and microsoft ICE. Here's a quicky, very lightly edited (curves and cloned out a tree branch).

I couldn't take more shots because I was confronted by someone for taking pictures

I'm sorry mate but Flickr says it's unavailable
Congrats on the 28 f/3.5 though, I should use mine some more. I do like the field of view on APS-C. It's nice on film as a wide too.

Woopsies... I guess I figured that despite it being set to private on flickr itself if I linked it it would be viewable

That normally works for me.
Did you set it to private after you linked to it?
