IQ can be quite different reversed, depending on the lens. But the M50/1.7 is a good lens either way. You get more slightly more magnification for a given amount of extension with the lens reversed. In general you can expect lenses to perform best in the normal configuration for 1:1 and less, reversed for greater magnifications. But it's worth experimenting.
My favourite reversing lens for many years was the M 28/3.5. Reversed it gave me about 2.1X magnification because I used a 52>49 step down ring to match a 52mm reversing ring to the 49mm filter thread on the 28/3.5 moving the lens a bit farther from the film.

The distance from the lens mount to the subject with a reversed lens is the registration distance (mount to film/sensor) which is something 45.46 mm (?) with Pentax lenses. The 50mm reversed should give you about 1.1 X. Extension tubes increase the magnification significantly.

I haven't tried that one but would like to, and compare it to the K28/3.5 which is excellent reversed (or normal!).

I believe they are optically similar. I was very happy with my 28/3.5 normal (and reversed)

The optical designs are quite different, which is why I'd enjoy doing a direct comparison.

I've done a comparison of the two (and a couple of other 28s), though not reversed. The results are here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/193250-manual-...k-vivitar.html.

Differences are more subtle than one being sharper than the other. In the end, I sold the M version, but only once I had a mark II version of the 28/2.8. Otherwise, I wouldn't have sold the M 28/3.5, because it's much smaller than the K version and just as sharp, though I prefer the rendering of the K.

Nice comparison; the M28/3.5 does indeed show well there, although I also prefer the K in those shots. I rather like the version I M28/2.8 I have, but should probably sell it now that I have the K28/3.5, which I like better in most respects. The small size of the M is nice, though.

Nice shot from a nice lens. That K-01 & M75-150 has got to be a strange-looking combo

Not a great photo, but I liked the late afternoon lighting.

Thanks Paul, I think this combo actually looks alright, because M75-150 is just so small

You're right - that does look pretty good! I guess I was envisioning it on the 'banana' K-01 . Nice volleyball series - that lens is a real gem.

M150/3.5 in Singapore Botanic Gardens

One for the M club: M 150/3.5, 1100 ISO K5 - ppd in LR3. I got the M 150mm late last year and used it a lot on a trip to Italy. Very pleased with it. A little bit of purple fringing with harshly contrasting edges wide open, but that's easily remedied in Lightroom. This is the flower of the cannonball tree (it's called that because the seeds are contained in a ball - not visible here – the size of a cannonball, which explodes, sending them all over the place).

Excellent lighting of an extraordinary subject. The flowers resemble sea anemones.
