Down the side of the Louvre, by a M35/2.8. Totally trust this lens, to take on trips to great places.

Pentax-M 100mm f:2.8?

Earlier this spring, I bought a very nice 100mm f:2.8 lens, but have yet to find the time to give it a thorough "day in the field" test. What is your opinion of this lens? Many, MANY years ago, I had a 105mm M-42 lens and it was superb! I'm hoping the 100 is as good.

I think the difference is that the m100/2.8 has more contrast and is a bit sharper wide open to around f4.0. The takumar 105s (especially the super taks and the preset 105/2.8) have better bokeh because more/rounder aperture blades. The m100/2.8 has a very punchy color rendition and controls flare really well, whereas the super taks have a toned down color palette and flare more in backlight. My faves, in order, are the preset 105/2.8 (black barrel) then a very old copy of the super tak 105/2.8, followed by the m100/2.8. I wish the latter had more aperture blades. I do prefer m100/2.8 to the smct 105/2.8 and the K105/2.8 which is overrated and also suffers from poor bokeh.

m135/3.5 with AF1.7x converter

This combo really does great. All at f5.6 (f9.5)

The M 100/2.8 is a fine lens. It's lightweight, easy to carry, and exhibits plenty of sharpness and character. I've been delighted with my copy.

I can't see any M200 f4 shots in the last pages, here there are a pair of mine taken with my K2DMD and Portra160:

Not a super sharp lens, but decent and as big as a small 135 mm:

This is one of the coolest pics I've ever taken, please appreciate the bokeh at f4:

Very nice capture. It lends itself to B& W well. The composition and lighting are both excellent.

I too have this lens, but alas, I have yet to give it a chance to show it's merits. So many lenses, so little time!

Thank you!

It's interesting to read the M35/2.8's relatively low rating here on the Forum reviews: 8.16, compared to the A35/2.8's very respectable 9.20. Even though the two lenses appear to have similar optical designs.

I don't know what your experience is, but I find the lens sharp at infinity, with good rendering and colours - and I don't hesitate to use it as my main walk-around lens, despite owning the DA35 Limited, for example. So to me its one of the more under-valued MF lenses.

Having praised its sharpness and colours, here is one of my personal favourites of the many M35/2.8 photos I took in and around Paris recently - at Versailles:

I have learned to take the reviews with a very large grain of salt. Quite often, the overall scores are skewed by someone with an axe to grind - a bad experience with poor copy of the particular lens - and it reflects poorly on the overall rating of the lens. I own several lenses which have proven themselves time and again, only to be rated rather poorly. As the old adage goes, "The proof is in the eating of the pudding."

I like the silhouette image. Very nice work. I envy you and your travels.

It is a lovely lens. I used it quite a bit on film and digital. I prefer the metal Takumar lens hood though rather than the "correct" plastic clip on one which I find gets knocked off too easily.
