I know I don't shoot much long tele and I didn't mean to go beyond M200, but couldn't resist temptation and just pulled trigger on M*300/4. Hope it's as good as reviews say and that * leads to expect. As only * in M series it should be optically the best, right?

BTW, nice wheel, Jonathan.

In Jasper, AB when the LX was the current camera, and when Pentax had full professional support, I stopped in a camera shop on the main street. (Gee, I'm sure no other member ever does this even when they aren't looking ...) and the owner saw me carrying my KX and showed me his new acquisition: an M * 300/4. He had it in a case similar to a Halliburton, all cut out foam and metal exterior, with a pair of LX bodies and several other Pentax lenses. His landscape special was a Pentax 20 mm something or other. My eyes saw only the beautiful 300. I am absolutely certain that you will adore it. The shop owner did.

Great lens. A touch of softness wide-open but razor sharp from there on in. Few full-size (16MP) shots here: SMC Pentax-M* 300mm f/4 | Flickr

I have been hunting thru the forum, and web in general, for the pics taken with M* prior to purchase and been thru yours several times and they are partly to be blamed for my purchase

I was on a walk today looking for spring flowers to shoot. M50/1.7:

Some carved wooden models in a rural hotel we stayed in last year. All taken with the M 35mm f/2, the first two at minimum focus distance.

I have a feeling you could be right. This lens is a beauty.

M*300/4 ISO800 1/125 handheld:

I might need to get a new more rigid tripod, because my current one vibrated quite heavily with the new lens. Especially when I used a set of extension rings to cut down the minimum focusing distance to be able to shoot indoors, which made it even more nose heavy. 4m is a long way when you have walls around you
I wasn't totally satisfied with my first set of photo, cause when editing them, it was clear that they could be even better. Therefore I tested different shooting methods to eliminate the vibration. I think I got it now.

Looks to me as if you will get the hang of this lens pretty soon. I wonder how many of us actually own and use extension tubes. I only have one, the 50 mm with no connections, just a tube, and it was purchased to bring the M 400 macro to 1:1. As a nice side effect, it reduced the close focus distance with the M 400 to about 9.5 ft (3.5m). On 24x36 it had a field of view of 5"x7.5". Haven't tried with it on the K-3; the 55-300 works more easily.

Thanks. What's kind of unfortunate is, the moon was out that night, and you can see light from the moon reflecting off the water in the RAW image in both pre and post processing. But once it's been resized and jpeg converted and shared, that detail is basically AWOL.

If you use a focusing rail on top of the tripods ball head it will adjust the centre of gravity and make it less nose heavy, its also very useful for making small distance adjustments, the ones with backwards, forwards and side movements are useful and plentiful on e-bay.
