I think I would sell my M 50 1.4 to partially fund the purchase of a 50 1.2 (or maybe 3rd party 55 1.2) but I would keep my M 50 1.7. It's such a slim lens and the sharpness wide open is great on film.
I've the M 50/1.7 but never used it on digital... The other 50/1.7 I own is the F version... I do own the 50/1.4 in A version and Tak (and Ricoh) and I love it.... Why do ppl love that 1.7? I do not like my F 1.7 at all.

Now, for a 50/1.2, I'd probably join them all ( 2 1.7's and the tak 1.4) not the ricoh nor the A.

Edit - the Tak it is obviously the thorium version.

Edit edit - I wuldn't expect anyone doing such trade off - I mean I'd sell to get funds...

Well this ain't scientific, but based on my experience I feel that bokeh stopped down is better and it's better on landscapes. Also 1.7 handles sun in frame better than 1.4. Also night scenes turn out better with 1.7.

No problem. I just tried to clarify my lack of interest towards test charts

There's at least the wrap up at the end of my single in month with M50/1.4: The M Club! - Page 540 - PentaxForums.com
I think the notion that 1.4 is portrait fifty and 1.7 landscape fifty is a good way to describe the lenses. F4 naturally being the macro fifty and f2 the cheaper version of f1.7.
That was it, this wrap-up. Thanks for that. As to the 'scientific' side by side comparisons: I have tried on two ocasions to test whether I could use the 1.4 or 2 TC or crop on my M300/4*, but on both counts I just lost interest in recording all the required information and then comparing that with the photos. I have great admiration for people who are able to do this type of testing.

This I want to try out. My best night scene lens has been the A 50/1.4 - never tried a 50/1.7 at night with the lights

iheiramo gave an answer I would agree with aside from my not having any opinion on the M 50 1.4 vs 1.7 for landscapes. I feel like images with the 1.7 wide open are just more... controlled? than the 1.4. Go out in the evening and take some shots wide open with both where there's a row of street lights in the frame and see what you think. In my experience the 1.4's shots will create big flare beach balls around the lights where as the 1.7's will be a it smaller and less blown out. I don't know how to better describe it.

I also have an F 50 1.7 and honestly the DA 50 1.8 seems basically interchangable. I know that this opinion is not going to be shared by a lot of more serious shooters. I could see selling the DA instead, it really doesn't make much difference to me. Somehow the M 50 1.7 seems special and the F 50 1.7 really doesn't.

M28/2.8 is really good with night shots. I think it's the best I have.

I recently acquired F50/1.7. Will shoot a month with it before I make up my mind about it. So far I can only say that my F is sharper wide open than my M.

That's a surprise, given the M 1.7's rep.

My M28/2.8 is my favorite lens. See these

It did light ghosts on me on that last one. Also, I would not use the settings I used that day anymore - I think that was my first time doing night cityscapes; my settings have evolve (I think for the better)

The ghosting isn't obvious in the PF size, to me anyway.

I lied... I shot the F 50/1.7 that night. Maybe in AF hence the bad focusing see below (Sorry that this is the M thread!)

Nice shooting, Ed. I have an A35/2.8 that will ghost like that on bright highlights and reflections on chrome, etc.

Thanks Paul - I do not know why in some it happens, but not in others.
