auto110, I've spent a couple hours working on some pics I took this morning on my laptop with this page opened on my desktop to your grasshopper pic and everytime I glance over to your pic it grows on me more and more. At first I thought it was to high key kinda looking but I'm really starting to appreciate your development. Also, the M 100/4 Macro has long been on my radar but since I already have a Viv Series 1 105/2.5 I really need a great deal on one to pull the trigger but I have to say your pic really showcases it's abilities.
8540tomg, how in the world do you guys get so close to Egrets and Herons? I hate Great Blue Herons, ever since I got my 300/4 they will fly off if I get within 200 yards of them in my truck much less trying to get close to one on foot:-). Skittish doesn't come close to describing them.

Herons don't hang around much.

Eaglerapids, I agree about the herons. They are about as skittish a bird as I have ever met. (Or not met, most of the time ) I have yet to get myself a satisfactory shot of one.

Eaglerapids,

I agree with Albert - they are about the most skittish bird I've tried to capture with the American Goldfinch a close second. Getting close to these guys requires a lot of time and patience and often more than a little luck. It helps to study your subject, learn about their feeding habits and the time of day they are most likely to be active. I've been trying for a while to get a killer heron shot of any kind and I'm not there yet. The M 400/5.6 has helped a lot and that extra reach is a big advantage. That said, it seems no lens is long enough when it comes to birding.

In the images above I noticed this guy working the bank of the marsh heading towards my direction. I stood in plain sight and set up my tripod. The fact he could clearly see me and recognized I posed no threat may have helped some in this case. He gradually came within about 150 feet. Ideally, of course, one would set up a blind and spend the day but I don't have that kind of time or a blind.

Good luck with your heron hunt.

Tom G

M 50mm Wide open at F/1.7
This lens is a must have IMO considering you can get them for $30 easy.

50mm 1.7

Got a used *istD a couple of weeks ago, and the 50mm 1.7 was the first lens I got for it. And I'm liking it quite a lot. Shot at 1.7, 1600 asa, 1/90.

You should like it. You used it beautifully Ludoo. This is a wonderful image. Well done.

I agree. This is excellent. Wonderful subject, great focus, & excellent bokeh. She and you will like it even more years from now!

M 400/5.6

I'm not sure why but everything seems to be hiding in the bush when I go out shooting of late.

... but there's no escape from the M 400mm.

I almost gave away my Pentax M 135 f3.5 in the marketplace until I put it on my K-7 and did this with it in my home studio.

I am keeping this sucker.

Thanks Eaglerapids I humbly except your praise. The grasshopper just presented himself on a piece of grass and said "Hey look at me" All I did was push the shutter button.
The 100/4 Macro really is one of those lenses that you find yourself reaching for over and over. Most of the time my K20D is equipped with it or the M 50/1.7. I can't get enough of the Pentax M's.

Two mystery lenses

Why did Pentax release so many m-lenses between 100 and 150mm??
100mm, 120mm, 135mm and 150mm.

120mm and 150mm seem to be rare. Does anyone know how they compare to the 100mm and 135mm ?

Kind regards
.lars

The very few people who have them and post about them seem to like them, but they don't get a lot of attention, that's for sure. I keep thinking about that M120/2.8. Since getting the DA70, I don't use my M100/2.8 nearly as much as I used to, because the focal length is kind of close. So I usually take my M135/3.5 instead, but it is often longer than I need for concert photography, and half a stop slower. Just last night I took the M100/2.8 out for a spin again, though, and remembered just how much I love this lens:

K200D, M100/2.8, f/2.8, 1/45", ISO 1600

BTW, I say this was shot at ISO 1600, but it was pushed almost a stop, making it closer to ISO 3200...
