Well I'm originally from Philly, so my Aggie ties are my daughter and her husband (yes, under the old oak). On the other, hand as a teacher I have pointed any number of kiddos toward Aggieland.

However I'm the one with season tickets (17 years) to Kyle Field. This year was... long and painful. The kids live in St Louis so they have to settle for watching the games on TV - a lot cheaper and more comfortable.

If you are familiar with the Houston area, the photos were taken on Lake Conroe which is north of the city. It's interesting enough to do hand-hold with 500mm, but add in the moving deck of the boat, it becomes even more so. These two posts were my first two tries with the big lens on the boat. There were lots of throw-aways.

Gig 'em!

Don

We are all native Texans in my family, but Aggies are a breed unto themselves and cross all barriers. Probably only Notre Dame rivals the loyalty and support of Aggies for their school.....and each other.

I was guessing that might be on Lake Conroe. Yep, that would be some difficult shooting. A lot harder than me sitting here in my cozy office shooting out the windows at Otis squirrel and his buddies!

Best Regards!

The weather finally broke so I was able to get out with my new K-3 ll and my Sigma 150-500mm. I forgot the new flash enhancer at home and could have used it.

Nice shots...you got lucky to get those! Good shooting!

Got a little Spanish dove today in the bright sun...

...and my first shot of Otis this year...on the Cheater Branch.

Suck that belly in Otis and look like a manly squirrel!

Yeah, that's better!

Love it! I have been wanting to do a composite like this, but just had no luck with the birds around here.

Great light all around. Wished we had some of those sunshine here. Been all cold and gloomy over here.

Just joined the club! Come on shipping! Purchased the 170-500 APO DG from KEH. No hood, so I'm working on that now.

LOL yeah right you clearly don't have that thing dialed in and working well at all! It would take me 5 years and 50,000 clicks to get even one as good as you posted!

First day out was really frustrating....definitely a learning curve. The morning of this day I adjusted for back focus and helped a bunch. Since then I adjusted the focus for speed, added a T/C and upgraded my sd cards... can;t wait get out again

Wait. What? Help me with this.

Your photos are magnificent and your eagles are flying; my eagles just sit in trees. A lot of that is because I am incredibly bad at BIF and the eagles just don't have the patience to hang around for multiple takes.

So please explain again - slowly - exactly everything you did here. Maybe it will help give an old man a chance to catch a raptor - any raptor - on the wing.

Thanks,

Don

Here's what I found to be the best set up.

Back button focus.
9 point focus.
I used a tri pod and kept the ball head some what loose so I could follow the critters.
I shot in manual mode and used Auto ISO and set aperture on the lowest and shutter @1/1250 - 1/2000. I found this to be the best set up. If I was moving my lens with the bird (side to side) I could even drop as low as 1/800th of a second to drop my ISO a little more. Hope that helps.

My grammar sucked above....lol. My lens was back focusing so I adjusted for that in camera and it helped with the sharpness a ton. My particular lens can be set to prioritize speed of focus over accuracy. I now have it set for that.

I've had the best luck keeping the photos sharp up around f9 to f13 with a shutter speed around 1/800 to 1/1200 or so. These lenses are light hogs so it can be a balancing act. Back button focus is a must and keep your hand on the manual focus ring because if you loose focus on a BIF the only way to get it back is manual. I've gone back and forth between spot and 9 point and can't really decide which is better but there is no doubt kentesters shots are better than mine!

This one was with a 1.4 converter on it and out to the full 500mm hand held 1/1000 f13 ISO 1600 and really lucky!

Just to level set things. Rupert was kind enough to let me post some pics from my new lens. The above were with a Sigma Sport 150-600 on the front of a D750.
