Best OS for a Sigma 120-400

I have the Sigma 120-400 4.5 - 5.6 APO HSM on a K-1 and the sharpness has been an issue. the last pictures I took were on a tripod and shot with a 2 sec delay. There could have still been some shake I guess. My question has to do with the OS -- the lens has off, 1 or 2. The camera also has OS option. What is the best setting to use? With and without a tripod?

With a tripod ALWAYS remove any lens or sensor stabilization (OS or SR)

stabilizers do not like fine vibrations like those generated on a non stable tripod and stabilization would fight against those vibrations...

Without a tripod, the Sigma OS is pretty good, most say it's better than the internal SR or Pentax.
OS position 1 is for full handheld and would correct 2 axis (Horiz + Vert shifts), whereas position 2 would be on a single haxix (vertical), so you should use that only for objects in movement horizontally (like BIF or a moving car, bike, person, etc).

I always use the Pentax IBIS for stabilization. I have played with the Sigma OS but have been using in body so long I am accustomed to its quircks.

The various settings for the Sigma OS are off, normal stabilization, and stabilization for panning (eliminating one axis of stabilization).

I have struggled with sharpness, and really put it through its paces shooting sports and birds. I would offer that wide open the 120-400 is just plain soft. Further to that accurate focus can be a real trick. I have not posted much in this thread, but i'll add a few pics for you.

For example - hand held - f11

Heavy crop out of the centre handheld @ f8

handheld @ f8 with some OK light

Use Pentax TAV mode and don't be scared of higher ISO's - the faster shutter, and stopped down aperture will yield better results than shooting slow.

@ 5.6 but 1/800 shutter speed.

Thank you! I've noticed that recently we seem to be getting more variety of Raptors. Close to where I reside, we have Ospreys, a few Falcons, Northern Harriers and I've seen a couple of Juvenile Bald Eagles and one adult Bald Eagle (which sadly flew away from the side of the road because someone blared the horn at the car in front of them when they stopped in disbelief that there was a huge Eagle just sitting on a tree right there at the road). I don't think I've ever been so mad in my life lol.
