I've been photographing a newly born seal pup at local seal hangout Angel Bay - see more posts in adaptall lens club and 300mm lens club. KS2.

Shooting more with the K-3 lately, after a few years of K-1 only. I'm enjoying the extra reach and the reduced weight (even with the 150-450 attached), but am looking forward to enhanced AF and better high ISO on the K-new.

Still stuck in lockdown in Melbourne, with a 5km limit on travel, so not much to see or do except stalk the local birds. Still, an Eastern Rosella is always worth a look.

There've been a couple of occasions when I've mentioned the fact that the lens I've got will "auto-extend" or "auto-retract" by means of gravity if I don't hold it horizontally. E.g., attempting a bit of astrophotography at 450mm, when I pointed the lens toward the sky, it collapsed back to 150 as it "breathed". There was a bit of discussion, as others had that happen, too, and we "talked" about how best to restrain its movement (I used a big rubber band, other suggestions included gaffer's tape).

Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm wondering, how many copies of this model lens do that? Isn't this a "shouldn't happen situation"? Is it a common problem, or rare, and has anyone attempted a warranty claim or had to have the lens "repaired"?

What's your experience?

Yes, it does that. I never point it so vertical that it matters, but I can see it would be a problem if shooting steeply upward. I wouldn't say the lens is loose, just that there is a lot of weight in it, so it sags as you say. My only criticism of the DFA 150-450 is that the focus lock can only be engaged at 150mm; if you could use it at any focal length, your problem would be solved.

I was thinking the same thing. Instead of that locking mechanism, which would have to become a ratchet and pawl system to do what I want, I'm thinking one of those locking-ring functions some lenses have to keep the manual focus ring from changing position.
