Had some fun seeing how well my K1 did shooting through all the small branches... you definitely find yourself depressing the shutter partially a lot of extra times, even with the focus limiter on, but it's not as bad as you would think, even in very low light under the tree canopy.

There are a lot of blurred out branches in between the subject and I, they just get lost in the bokeh and soften some areas of the photos.
I've been doing this for years and still find it amazing that they come out as good as they do.

Some branches unfortunately do not cooperate, and just stand out, but I guess they add authenticity to the shot, heh. (that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it, LOL!)

Going to the "way back machine" for the Paul Harvey reference. Loved his broadcasts. Rarely ever missed one.

The 150-450mm wouldn't be the obvious go-to lens for flowers and macro work, but I like the sharpness, subject isolation & bokeh well enough that I'm not going to let it stop me if it is the lens on the camera at the moment, heh.
Agree. The best camera/lens for the shot is the one that you have with you.

Rob, I am always impressed by the clarity of your photos. I noticed that your shutter speed is 1/1600. Do you turn off the shake control when shooting at higher speeds?

Also, if the Roo had been in the same location on an overcast day, what would you do differently?

Cheers,
Loyd

Thanks! No, I leave shake reduction on. I understand that it's best to turn it off when using a tripod, but I seldom use a tripod for wildlife. I photograph things which I encounter along the way while walking, so the photos are hand-held. If the light was poor and the camera wanted to go above the 10,000 ISO auto-ISO limit which I've set, I'd first open the aperture. If that was already as wide as possible, I'd drop the shutter speed. I try to maintain the shutter speed to reduce blur due to camera motion and subject motion.

I do the same, but in a low-light situation, my ISO will be about 8000, which is quite grainy. Do you use Paint Shop Pro to remove the grain? I use a Topaz product, but I also own Paint Shop.

I also use Paintshop Pro to create the final jpeg file, but for noise reduction on high ISO images, I use DXO Photolab 5 on the RAW file to create a TIFF to edit with PSP. The noise reduction in PSP isn't great, but I prefer it for tweaking the levels, saturation and the quality of JPEG output. I've had problems with quantization in DXO JPEG files.

Hi RobG,

Currently, I use the batch conversion feature in PhotoPad Pro, sold by NCH Software of Australia (I believe). Have you used this product?

I am also wondering why you don't allow your K3 III to produce a JPEG image at the same time as it produces a DNG image. I am considering doing just that, in order to avoid the conversion through PhotoPad.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Cheers,
Loyd

Sorry, no, I haven't tried that one.

I used to do that, but now I just use RAW and use the camera to create a JPEG on rare occasions when I transfer the JPEG from camera to phone if I want to put it straight onto FB or Instagram. Creating multiple files takes time and slows down the camera. I'd rather have a higher number of FPS and use DXO for noise reduction later. DXO AI noise reduction only works on the RAW file and is particularly effective at reducing noise in the bokeh. I never post the full camera resolution, and I tend to deliberately underexpose in order to protect the highlights, so a bit of tweaking as well as a lot of resizing is needed to create the jpeg to put on the Internet. I generally post a vertical resolution of 1080 pixels. Horizontal resolution depends on the aspect ratio.
Not using RAW+ also saves a lot of time in file transfers and storage space on my NAS.
