BIF with K-1 are significantly easier then with my K3.
Hello Noel,
Those shots look OK to me, and thanks for posting. Good to see some BIF shots with the K-1 and the 150-450.
I'm thinking K1 + 150-450 + 1.4xTC is going to be a good birding combination.
I currently use this combination on a K-3 II and always running into trouble with higher ISO in woodland settings (lower light, shade), so hoping the K-1 will help.

Cheers,
Terry

Nice pics, and that's interesting. Until now, I wasn't keen on the K1 because I like having the extra effective focal length from the crop factor. If the AF is significantly better, that changes things! I assume that you updated the K3 firmware to work with the lens?

Yes I did, I'm not complaining about the K3, it is what it is. I can understand the slight reach advantage of the K3, however, the autofocus (AFC) advantages along with the better noise and DR of the K-1 puts the K-1 as the "most likely" camera I'd grab. Off course, only time will tell if this the case in 100% of circumstances.

Good to know, thanks! Isn't a 1.5x crop factor more than a "slight" advantage though? On the DFA 150-450 that would be 450mm on the K1 and 675mm on the K3. Having said that I do appreciate that having more megapixels, less noise and more dynamic range would mean you could afford to crop more of a K1 image. I'd also be interested to know how the AFC on the K1 compares to the AFC on the K3ii.

It's not a bad portrait lens either.

I was in Yellowstone the past few days and finally saw a Grizzly bear. Plus she had 3 cubs with her. The bad part was that she was a long way off so I took my 150-450, mounted it on my K3 and stacked a 2x Vivitar Macro and Pentax 1.4 teleconverter to it. By the time you add it all up, it was equivalent to a 1980mm f 16 lens or there abouts. The results are way less than great, but at least I have proof of first spotting her and than getting a few shots of her. No cropping on this shot. It doesn't help any.

At least you got to see a griz sow and cubs. I went for years before I saw one and years more before a black bear.

I actually saw a black bear with two cubs on Friday, but the bear jam was so big that I didn't bother trying to find a place to pull over. I found this one in the Hayden valley area. I just entered a pull off and sat and scanned for a bit. Found a tiny spec hear a small show field and got out the binoculars. (Nikon 10x50 ) and saw her. Well over a half mile off. I did not see any wolves. Only one coyote. A few elk in the park. Two moose. (Again no place to pull off and park to get a shot.). I did get two pairs of sandhill cranes. One pair with a chick.

The internet service provider for the hotel I was in went down for the last few days and will e down for a few weeks. They got a virus in their system or something like that. So this morning is the my first time on line in a few days. This is my sixth time at Yellowstone since 1991. I finally did get out to the northeast entrance. The K1 performed flawlessly. Over 250 shots and still plenty of battery life.

Sounds like you had an eventful trip. Traffic jams are a real problem this time of year when there is significant wildlife activity. I missed out on the wolf sightings this year because of traffic jams. I've been going to the Park since 1979 and I've yet to see a moose to be able to get a shot. I know they're there but I've not seen one.

A few from Sunday. All of them on tripod, at 450mm.
