That lens sure does what it is meant to do !

On a tangent, I like most of those shots taken using the flash extender but at the same time, some do look sort of "weird".
Don't get me wrong, I think this would be a very useful piece of equipment especially (in my case) when shooting in dark conditions such as thickly forested areas for small birds hiding (camouflaging) on tree branches and trunks.
Also obviously very nice to have with backlit subjects.

Better Beamer attaches to an external flash, so you need Beamer and flash plus all the gumph to support it like batteries. The Safari attaches on the flash hot shoe and uses the camera's in-built flash. Might be the same price, but not exactly the same thing. The Beamer is also bigger and less robust.

For the in-built flash, it only works in P-TTL at 1/180th of a second, so no HSS. When I want HSS, I use an external flash (not all have HSS by the way) and a Beamer. My external flash is a Metz 58AF-2 and it uses a Better Beamer FX-3.

AdrianM your pics are wonderful and a great advertisement for the lens I'm also considering! I have the bigma and I'm really trying to see and decide whether I will miss anything from the bigma if I buy the new lens (especially if the 50-150 and 450-500 lengths are so important)

I have a question for you considering the safari flash extender as well! Do you plug the 8mm extender all the way in the flash hot shoe of the K-3 and K-5? I have the K-5IIs and the plastic curve that's on the extender prevents it from sliding all the way in the Pentax shoe... Have you also have this modified? Can you show us a pic of this particular joint of your equipment? Thank you in advance!

.. and we can't miss that great melon in the sky. This was taken hand-held using the 150-400 and the Pentax 1.4x rear Converter with my K-3 this evening. Section is a 100% crop of the original. F11 (corrected for the RC, so lens at f8).

I have already seen this and also the link @AdrianM posted.

From this thread as far as I can tell form the 1st picture with the K-5, the safari extender's 8mm base does not entirely slides in the Pentax shoe to fill the whole area that the hot shoe cap covers, but slightly until the protruding plastic curve hits the hot shoe base...

That is what I'm asking. Am I right?

IIRC you have to push it all the way into the hotshoe. If needed slice the front of the tab that the bump is on so it can be pushed in.
I had to slice mine, I believe Adrian says his just gave when he pushed hard enough.
If you don't do it the whole thing is unstable as only one side of the shoe will grip.

Yup just checked mine, this is how it looks.

I thought this also.....but you push it right in.....quite hard the first time....but becomes easier. The whole device becomes much more secure......I used it a bit initially before pushing it right in. I didnt cut/trim mine.

Just got my 150-450 today :)

Now i can join in here ordered on Tues. & it arrived Sat.,very fast shipping from Holland! & a great shop Pentax HD FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6 DC AW - Telezoom - Objectieven Onze prijzen zijn internet-prijzen & the best prices in Europe!

since its cloudy & raining only a couple of mandatory cats pics OOCJPG no PP
its a heavy one & grip is needed, makes the DA300 feel like a 50mm,but possible to handhold for me..will see when I go out birding when the sun comes again..
so far it seems as good as the DA*300 & AF is so much faster than the DA*300 (on K5II)
will try with 1.4TC & AFA1.7 TC & stacked when light permits
now to find a case that fits it & the camera...

A Rainbow Bee-eater from this morning. It wouldn't let me get close enough, so I took the "artistic" approach of keeping more perch in the shot.

K-3 with 150-450, f8

Very nice! Maybe you could have lowered the ISO a bit?
