I bought a gimbal head today, hopefully that would give me a bit better stability and performance out of my 300/f2.8, if not I'll sell it and get the darn 150-450, to hell with it.

I also have the Sigma 300 2.8 I will keep it. I am getting rid of the 50-500 OS and 70-200 2.8.


The gimbal head just work great for me.

Great set, how did you find the tracking and the general handling of the combo?

I posted my "mini review" to Pentax Forums here, in the thread about this this lens in general.

I've been posting a lot about my experiences, including more photos, to DPReview in a thread I started myself, here.

The latter provides observations from the start, and it still continuing. It contains photos that would probably not be suitable in this thread, because it includes things that went wrong, screen shots of Lightroom grids showing burst mode, etc. It also has discussions with various other people there. And the photos shown there are shown much larger than here, way beyond the Pentax Forums limit. (I used a constraint of 2500 x 2000 in Lightroom's export function).

So I would suggest people wanting to see how someone adapts to this lens from the first hour or two look at that latter thread. And anyone wanting to see the above photos much larger, go to the link just above.

Note: all photos are Lightroom only. No Photoshop. I could get a lot more out of them with Photoshop!

This is a good lens - but not one for beginners!

You used the built-in flash too, in X mode?
What difference would it make if you had used "normal" (i.e.: Av or TAv for instance) mode and pop the flash ?

I am still "on edge" with using the TC with this lens .... seems like you've nailed it right on the button for focus.
There is hardly any visible loss of details here !

When the in-built flash is popped up, the shutter speed is set to 1/180th, ie the camera basically enters X mode, and then adjusts accordingly. In Av mode, the highest shutter speed is 1/180th, but it does allow slower shutter speeds. That means risking too slow shutter speed to get a moving target like a bird. I find it better to use X-mode because I have set ISO to the front control wheel and that allows me to control the overall exposure balance between background and foreground better.
