I'd love to post photos here, but first I have to spend over $3K on a certain lens. Hopefully other folks will forgive me if I post a bit more info about the Satin Bowerbird which Tim photographed above. The "bower" is a display ground where the male dances to attract females. It isn't a nest. The male with the best collection and the best performance wins the girls, and she builds the nest and raises the young. I have watched a Satin Bowerbird paint his bower (and I have photos to prove it). In the 80's, an article was published in Scientific American which proved that Satin Bowerbird males steal from each other's collections, a rare thing for animals to steal things that aren't food. The Albert Lyrebird (I think the one in the photo is a female) male is an amazing mimic and can copy any sound. I've heard the related Superb Lyrebird reproducing the sound of a car alarm - including the volume. There's a video of David Attenborough on youtube with a Lyrebird copying camera shutter sounds. Many other Australian birds mimic - even the tiny Yellow Throated Scrubwren.

The same could be said for most Australians.

From my visit to Yellowstone last week

1) This coyote had no issues of coming within 30 feet (10 meters) of me and my son. On the prowl for small critters. They have adapted to the presence of wolves in the park by coming closer to where the people are. The wolves tend to stay away from people and roads. This one climbing an embankment to cross the road.

2) Technically lousy photo of a badger.

3) Snowing when we arrived in the park. The elk had not started calving yet but the bison were pretty much done.

4) Osprey with fish.

5) Hard winter for this bison. Showing scars from a predator attack. Pretty underweight with ribs showing too.

It is all luck of the draw. The photo of the fox would have never have happened if there had been room to park at the bear jam.less than 1/8 mile away. No spot to stop so we went done the road a bit to turn around. Saw the fox and photographed it while Steve and Don were photographing the black bear and her cubs.

It looks like all the main roads should be open when you are there. The water main break was caused by earth moving on a mountainside. They had to wait for the mountain to stop moving before they could patch the road. Almost all wildlife photos were made in the Lamar Valley. We did not get to the Hayden valley as it would have involved a two hour or more trip each way to get there and we did not have the time. You take what the park gives you. With all the snow up high, bears are down low right now. A lot of snow still at the higher altitudes.

Approaching the park form the south you will see a lot of fire damage. The snow along the roads in the southern end of the park was much deeper than on the northern side. In places over 6 feet deep. The Grand Tetons got over 400 inches of show this past winter.

No elk had calved yet so there should be plenty of them to see when you are there. They tend to stay near the roads where the wolves do not go. A lot around Mammoth Hot Springs last year.

Enjoy your stay there. It was certainly the most productive wildlife viewing I have ever had while in the park. Saw more bears this year than my previous 7 visits combined.

I believe that this White Rhino (at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha Nebraska) might be eating a May Flower

Resolution 1400 x 794 pixels

[ the name "white" is a error in translation - the name should have been translated as "wide" not "white" according to the sources I have read these are grazers not browsers those are the Black Rhino - The Difference Between Black and White Rhinos ]

Thought that I post some pictures taken last year on our trip to Namibia & Botswana. I had just gotten the 150 - 450, so the learning curve was steep! I did not regret the purchase. Its a fine lens and performs well together with the K-1.
