our first trip to Gran Tetons + Yellowstone starts 6/1, I can only hope to see what you folks found and perhaps get some photos as well]
It is all luck of the draw. The photo of the fox would have never have happened if there had been room to park at the bear jam.less than 1/8 mile away. No spot to stop so we went done the road a bit to turn around. Saw the fox and photographed it while Steve and Don were photographing the black bear and her cubs.
It looks like all the main roads should be open when you are there. The water main break was caused by earth moving on a mountainside. They had to wait for the mountain to stop moving before they could patch the road. Almost all wildlife photos were made in the Lamar Valley. We did not get to the Hayden valley as it would have involved a two hour or more trip each way to get there and we did not have the time. You take what the park gives you. With all the snow up high, bears are down low right now. A lot of snow still at the higher altitudes.
Approaching the park form the south you will see a lot of fire damage. The snow along the roads in the southern end of the park was much deeper than on the northern side. In places over 6 feet deep. The Grand Tetons got over 400 inches of show this past winter.
No elk had calved yet so there should be plenty of them to see when you are there. They tend to stay near the roads where the wolves do not go. A lot around Mammoth Hot Springs last year.
Enjoy your stay there. It was certainly the most productive wildlife viewing I have ever had while in the park. Saw more bears this year than my previous 7 visits combined.
