Wow - there's a lot of atmospheric distortion happening there!
Cool image though.

This was taken in September at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in New York. These two shots explain a frustration with the lens. At 450mm and at a distance the bokeh is pretty bad. Close up the lens performs great, and at shorter focal lengths it is a rock star. But when you stretch it to the max, it just does not perform. The area in focus is pretty sharp. The out of focus looks like an old CRT Tv with bad ghosting. It performs like this on both my K3 and K1. The lens is two+ years old. This image was shot a f8 at 1/1000 second.

Maybe the lens needs to be sent in for repair. That doesn't look good.

I agree, as it's the same on 2 bodies it's not likely to be a camera setting/calibration issue. I've never had an issue at 450 on mine. Most of the time I shoot that range.

Terry,

The Wren and the Fantail, handheld at 945mm equivalent AND 800 ISO.

I'm starting to get jealous.

Hello Craig,
When I started out with this set-up a lot of images found their way into the trash.
I tried using a monopod but it just didn't work for me, so persevered with handheld shooting and now it is much easier.
Higher ISOs are often necessary with this lens and teleconverter as the fastest f-stop is f/8 when at 630mm.
It's nice (wonderful!) when there's enough light to shoot at 100 ISO with a decent shutter speed, but that's not very often when chasing birds in woodland.

Cheers,
Terry

I always like seeing that distortion with the sun and moon low on the horizon.

It looks very cool! We don't get atmospheric effects like that - not that I've seen, anyway!

Wow, you must have been close and with good light! This one I caught today isn't nearly as detailed.

First Wildlife Shots

I finally had a chance to try my new lens on wildlife in the woods. I've included both the original shot and the slightly edited crop. Shot handheld at about 40-50 yards.
