I think other guests at the apartment complex we were staying in feed the lorikeets, this one and its buddy were looking for a hand out which always helps them be cooperative.

Very little time lately to take any pictures so I just try and snap a couple whenever I have the chance.

I have been re-reading the PF reviews of the DFA 150-450; the one using an APS-C camera before the K1 was released and the update with the K1. Both are adamant that the lens requires a tripod or at least a monopod.

Having performed this comparison, we cannot recommend the Pentax 150-450mm for hand-holding; lighter lenses such as the DA* 60-250mm F4 handle much better, as do long Sigma zooms like the 150-500mm. The 150-450mm gets by handling-wise only when you don't operate the zoom or focusing rings frequently.

The use of a solid tripod or monopod is almost mandatory to properly use the 150-450mm.

With several years of experience now under our belts, and 147 pages of posts to this thread, I wonder how that advice has panned out with time. Personally, I use the lens almost exclusively hand-held, with (to my mind) great results. Despite its size, I don't find the handling difficult. What is your experience? Do you endorse the recommendation to only use it with a tripod or monopod?

I too use it almost exclusively hand-held. It isn't hard to handle IMO. It can become somewhat heavy if holding it up for several minutes.
Like any long optic a slight amount of shake is exaggerated at distance - so I'll brace on something if needed to make sure any shake doesn't make me miss the focus.
