How do you tell the difference between a Variegated Fairy-wren and a Purple-backed Fairy-Wren?

How do you tell the difference between a Variegated Fairy-wren and a Purple-backed Fairy-Wren?

It seems to be the same bird, but the inland subspecies has such different colouration from the coastal ones I used to see in Queensland that a different name doesn't seem unreasonable. I will have to try to find out what the story is. I checked ebird and it only lists Malurus assimilis, not the other variegated subspecies such as lamberti which is on the east coast. According to my field guides there's five subspecies of Variegated Fairywren of which assimilis is only one. I used the "Purple-backed" name in this case because he looks so different from the drab birds I remember. And this article concurs.

I don't normally photograph nests, but this pair of Welcome Swallows built their nest inside a birding hide, so I figure it's fair!

No worries! It's clearer for me too, although the fact that I couldn't find the other subspecies of Malurus in ebird was disturbing.

Hey all,
Great pics in this thread! I recently picked up a used 150-450mm and it's been a learning experience! I'm shooting on a KP. I had a lot of missed shots early on, but after doing a micro AF adjustment, I think it's looking better now. I also like to pair it with the 1.4x TC, although handheld shots start to suffer a little at that point. Here are a few pics from the coastal wetlands of North Carolina.



This one's at 630mm, so full extension plus the 1.4x TC:


And here it's a little noisy (ISO 12,800), but still a fun shot of a curious little fellow

A couple from Conwy RSPB - the Great Egrets have been a feature through the summer. And a seal at Angel Bay.
