Wowsers! What wonderful birds. I have started applying your advice. Here is my first effort at using the 150-450 to photograph a flycatcher in the forest: f5.6, 1/1250, ISO2500, focus
450mm (no cropping). The image of the Air Tractor was a bit easier to nail down. Have yet to catch one in flight. Can anyone suggest some settings for a plane in flight?

Cheers,
Loyd

All three are good, but the 1st, with the reflection in the water, and the third with the insect in the bird's beak, are special. Very clean sharp images with the added interest of the reflection/captured insect.

Good catch. They are pretty abundant in my area this year.

Hi Rob,

I read the EXIF on FLICKR. What is meant by Contrast - High, Saturation - Normal, Sharpness - Hard? Did you make adjustments using Photoshop? Was your original photo RAW?

Cheers,
Loyd

I'm not Rob, and I don't even play him on TV...but when I shoot RAW I still get that junk in my Exif too...

I "think" it's left there because some software can use/apply those camera settings as the intended defaults when you open up the RAW and go to save to jpg, though my Photoshop always opens with my basic zero adjustments by default. It might also be because I have my K1 setup to do RAW + JPG in the other card, so maybe the RAW's get the same Exif as the Jpg because of that. Not sure, and maybe not very helpful, but that's my .02 additional cents.

I notice that the 150-450 image is more blurry and there is a strange halo around the shape of the bird. My question is: is it OK and just the 300 result is better because of the deeper DOF or is it some kind of problem that the 150-450 acquired at the initial fall from the car (maybe the optical elements need alignment?)
...
My observation is that there is a dramatic difference in the depth of field, which suggests to me that either the iris in the lens is still not right, or that you took the pictures with different f/stop settings.

I don't use Photoshop, I use Corel Paintshop Pro and preciously DxO for RAW, but it doesn't support the K3iii. Most of the images I have posted from the K3iii are edits in Paintshop of the JPG files from the K3iii. Those EXIF values are from the camera. You'll find that they can be set in the interface in the colour management settings which affect the JPG output not the RAW.
