A little hummer from this evening. Right at minimum focus distance, cropped to 21.5MP. Low light, so cleaned up after processing with Denoise AI. K-3III: 1/250, f5.6, ISO 6400

I always get a kick out of how these Osprey hover right before they dive, go headfirst, then rotate to feet first. The next set will show the aftermath, and the hard slog getting back out of the water, heh.

Tough act to follow an amazing sequence like that. Thanks for sharing!

Great sequence!

It is an aerodynamic phenomenon - the bird is flying close to stalling speed, and the airflow is becoming turbulent and unstable, as a result there is movement of the feathers that won't occur in 'normal' flight.

Yeah, I figured the boundry layer is gone once it almost stalls and any air moving the other way is going to lift those feathers, heh. Fun stuff.

Nah, just right place right time... if you want to see loads better work, go look at Mark Smith's channel... the guy has done some amazing Osprey work... but I'm trying, so thanks for the encouragement!

In February '21 I saw this hawk sitting on the clematis trellis' base. I carefully opened the mini-blinds between the double-pane glass (hence the "blinds bokeh") and shot this hawk (please help with ID) for about a half hour. Image quality is what you would expect for shooting through blinds and double-pane glass.

I expected to get a couple of shots, and then it would be gone. It evidently caught a bird from the feeder (I wondered earlier why they weren't coming) and brained itself against the siding of the house in the process. Other images show blood on the beak and pin feathers that do not belong to the hawk. Shooting through the windows gave a greenish tint to the images which were difficult to correct.. My mom drove the car up beside it and it stayed in place until I went outside via another door and opened the car door on the opposite side. It labored to fly to the first story roof. A day later it was seen on the ground a couple of blocks away. I hope it made it.

i did not know until I took the images that the birds have an outer eyelid that goes up vertically, and an inner semi-transparent eyelid that travels sideways. Thought someone might like to see that feature. All images are K-1 crops.

Osprey? What Osprey, just a big splash...

Oh, that Osprey! The American judge gave him only 4.0 because of the giant splash.

I've got another sequence almost ready to post from later in that day, a little closer and not cropped to death quite as bad as these which are nearly 100% crops... I really need a 600mm or to get a K3-III...
Eric

Thanks very much!

Too kind, thanks!

Some more random Osprey shots…

Dunno why, but this pic pulls a few of my strings. I guess it's the pose, it reminds me of a few things, several things really… like rower crewing down the river I used to live on… like an angel bowing before God with his wings out front… like an Olympic swimmer doing a breast stroke… I dunno, there is some connection there on the tip of my brain. Something that humanizes this Osprey and his struggle to get airborne and the extreme reach out of his wings, head bowed down, all wet after his dive, yet still showing a certain grace, dignity and power. Oh well, you’d probably have figured it out sooner or later, but yeah, now you know... I’m not normal, LOL.

I don’t know who he’s calling, but it sure was loud. Funny how sometimes the larger birds make the higher pitched call's you might expect from a smaller bird.

Pentax K-1 HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6ED DC AW ƒ/7.1 450.0 mm 1/2000 iso250

I thought this was an almost majestic pause while he slowed and spotted some new prey.

Not sure if this post belongs here... If this is not helpful, let me know, and I'll delete. This is to show what computational photography (Topaz Labs) can do with OOF areas due to limited DOF.

The first panel is the original JPG. The second is from the image posted here a few days ago. I used Denoise AI after some processing in camera raw. The last panel is further processing with Sharpen AI version 3.3.6.

It took four to five minutes to for my older i7 quad core, 32GB ram, 2GB video laptop to process and save the image with Sharpen AI. I posted the original size screen capture so you could compare actual pixels.

That's a pretty clear difference. It's going to become more and more about what you can do with the image processing ...
There is a section for post processing but I think you are perfectly justified in X-posting in relevant lens threads.

Finally, someone grabs a fish, and I missed the dive! This guy was way out, the opposite side of the inlet and this is cropped to smithereens.
Times like this I really envy the people who can just go order something like the GMaster 200-600mm and go play... but I'm not even sure the extra 150mm would have helped all that much at this distance.
