A rare lens ?

Is the K 35mm F3.5 a very rare lens?

I have always thought that the K30mm F2.8 and K 35mm F2.0 were rare....but the fact is that I can find both these lenses without problems. The K 35mm F3.5 is a different story.....I am not able to find it. Can anyone help? I search on Ebay, KEH and BHphotovideo (and of course the marketplace on this site).

Kind regards

Yes they are a little hard to find. I eventually found mine as part of a KM camera kit on eBay Germany.

Keep checking one will show up one of these days. The K35/3.5 is worth the wait!

KEH had one for sale last week, in EX condition, only $80 USD. I was too late.....

I am amazed that this lens, one of the sharpest and richest color rendering lenses Pentax has ever made, now changes hands for less than $100. As recently as 2007 it was hard to find one under $289, and I recall a 2004 ebay bidding war taking one over $500.

The seller jco on ebay has one from time to time.

I think that's just about right around $100 since it has the 35/2 to compete against, it would be pointless to sell it at the same price with the 35/2. $289 is just too much IMO, especially the autofocus FA35/2 is just within that reach. regarding the bidding war in 2004, strange things do happen. I just hope that that 2004 bidding is done without scam or price jacking.

I would have expected the K 35mm F3.5 to sell for approx $200 USD.

I also don't understand how the M 50mm F1.7, M 135mm F3.5 and M 200mm F4 can be sold for less than $100 USD. They are worth more than that IMO. However, it's great that people on a tight budget can afford good glass.

Kind regards

Yes some of those “slower” K series lenses can be had for under $100USD:

K28/3.5
K35/3.5
K55/1.8
K55/2.0
K135/3.5

They are all still great lenses and a bargain to boot! They go pretty quickly if one comes up for sale on eBay.

This urge for fast old lenses is a bit weird. I mean, I have shot many concerts in low light and always used F2.8-F3.5 and ISO 400-800. Considering that you now get DSLRs with excellent IQ even at ISO 2000.....then apertures like F1.4-F2.0 are not really needed to keep a good shutter speed. I would pay much more for the 35mm F3.5 than 35mm F2 as the F3.5 seems to be the best one IQ wise, and it's smaller as well. The argument that fast lenses have more glass and therefore more expensive to manufacture has no validness for lenses that are 30 years old.

Kind regards

It is necessary for that shallow DoF, however.

Sure, some people specializes in narrow DOF pictures....an artistic style I guess. Then it makes perfect sense.

The question is how often do most people use those apertures? It would be interesting to gather statistics from everyone owning a F1.4-F2 lens and find out the percentage of shots taken at F1.4-F2. I think the result would show that many people are wasting their money and carrying unnecessary big lenses.

Kind regards

+1 for 35/3.5 IQ and 28/3.5 sharpness throughout its hyperfocal range.

I'm just stunned that "fashion" has altered their values so much in just a year.

My money is sunk money already - and I should probably welcome price declines on any other of the fine K lenses I have passed on over the years.

You make a number of valid points Lars. That being said I am of another opinion on fast manual focus lenses. While it is true you may not use the largest aperture all the time it is nice to have that speed when you need it. More importantly, in my opinion, is the fact fast glass is always brighter in the finder. This makes manual focusing a lot easier than the dimmer slower lenses. There is a world of difference between my K 200/2.5 and M 200/4 in the viewfinder. This bonus is there every time I use the lens. Now is this worth the extra weight and cost? It is to me. I always try to get the fastest lenses I can afford as I value the viewfinder brightness and ease of focusing that comes along with it with older manual focus lenses.
